Monolith Announces Next Big Project – Batman The Board Game [Updated With Models!]
February 23, 2017 by brennon
Monolith has announced their next big project as they are showing off prototypes of Batman: The Board Game at the 2017 Game Festival in Canne.
As a property, this one is pretty massive and it will be interesting to see what they do with this. With Conan under their belt and a rather fantastic game at that, they could borrow from that or indeed go in an entirely new direction!
Hopefully, we'll see more of what they are showing off over the next day or so so keep your eyes peeled.
Update: You can see some of the models on offer for the game here...
...and here are some close-ups of the models from Bawon Samdi showing off Batman...
...Bane and Clayface,
...and then a roster of extra villains including Catwoman, Scarecrow and Riddler.
The models are looking fantastic and each of them really looks to have embraced their traits. Bane looks mad and hulked out, Clayface has his warped sledgehammer hand, and Catwoman is lithe and graceful to name just a few of them.
It will be awesome to see where this goes in the future!
Thanks to @redben for the heads-up on this one...
What do you think of the news?

Already happily suckered in on Conan and MB:P. Sign me up for this one already, and I don’t even know anything about it!
They are the reason i broke my KS embargo lol, looks like i will be pledging on this if it goes to KS and assuming the viking teaser at the end of the MB:P campaign means we will be getting a MB:Valhalla then i can hear my bank balance crying already 😉
The mini’s them selves look really good too, any one know what scale they are?
Wondering if could proxy them into knight’s batman mini game…
Batmans a big licence to have. Does this really need to go to Kickstarter?
The answer is yes. Batman might be a big licence but Monolith aren’t a big company and it makes sense for them to head to Kickstarter to raise capital to produce this.
They also are taking a loss at retail on Conan so this might never see store distribution.
Is Conan really doing that bad at retail? That’s a shame because it’s a great game. I wonder if they will bother putting their expansions out to retail.
I don’t think it’s poor sales but taking a per unit loss when selling to a distributor. They’ve already said Mythic Battles will probably be direct only. It. It may be that they can account for it with Batman and make sure it can be sold at retail at a profit.
It is a border line boutique product, it’s not quite Kingdom Death but the quality of the gaming pieces is what you might describe as Lavish. I think the RRP is around £80, which seems quite steep but if they’re making a loss by selling via a distributor it would seem that the rrp is too. £80 is a lot for a game but comparable to other products such as Games Workshop’s miniatures games or Star Wars Imperial Assault and increasing the asking price could make it uncompetitive. But if they can sort their shit out and get their website… Read more »
That’s a shame because I haven’t been able to find Conan at retail over here, and was looking to pick it up (having missed the kickstarter…. bummer, I hope they keep producing it and maybe sell it online.
It might also help them if they got their own webstore up and running though.
You already have Batman miniatures which aren’t on KS. Knight Models Batman miniatures are in higher quality metal, but the miniatures alone will cost your $12 each. WizKids sells its HeroClix figures, sold in random packs and (cough) prepainted. We don’t know what will set off Monolith’s game from HeroClix if you’re just looking for Batman figures.
$12?
Good luck there…normal is $20 and most online store sell for $16-$18.
Ooh – that looks like the right kind of Batman for me. (or rather one of the right kinds…)
If they’ll capture this aestetic I’m going to be *very* tempted. Also, the black and white colouring with sharp edges might work even for a more or less 3d board game with miniatures. Or with a very reduced colour palette.
given how blurred the lines are between miniature board games and skirmish games these days this is going to be really interesting, knight models will no doubt be watching.
what a fantastic title for monolith to get their hands on given their current success.
so many good products out there now it’s dizzying.
Very interested…will be watching
Superheroes really isn’t my thing (although Batman is one of the few I can tolerate) so I probably won’t go in for this. However having backed Conan, I would say anyone backing this is in for a treat if Conan is any measure of how good this will be.

I hope they will go small this time.
This indeed could be interesting…. would love to see how they do this

Just to be thorough: picture were taken by attendees to the convention, not by me.
Monolith choose the Kingdom Death Monster boutique route later they tried to go retail realizing Conan was popular. I don’t know why big properties like Conan and Batman would go with them. I would rather go with FFG if I am a big IP look how well Imperial Assault is treated. With Monolith you get lots of stuff unavailable, their pricing is terrible, exclusives etc… I really don’t know how they even had the money to get Batman couldn’t any big name company outbid them? If I had a big IP I’d want it to be retail focused whether or… Read more »

I don’t think the license that Monolith have was put out to tender and they won the bid. They will have approached DC with an idea and negotiated a licence with them that will explain specifically what they can and cannot do. And Conan was a high quality product right from the start. I remember watching the Weekender just after the Kickstarter launched and was very impressed with the quality of what I was seeing. Yes, they have issues with supply/distribution but I don’t think they’re necessarily a result of them changing the quality level of the game after the… Read more »
Gameboard doesn’t look very inspiring.
It’s a prototype for demos and tests. The final product will probably looks like Conan gameboard.
