Escape The Mines Of Moria In GW’s Upcoming Board Game
November 22, 2021 by fcostin
It has finally happened, a perfect opportunity to exclaim “THEY HAVE A CAVE TROLL!” on my own terms in an unforgettable battle, avoiding the incoming goblin onslaught in Moria.
Given the exciting theme, this year is the 20th Anniversary of the release of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I was sure this Christmas was going to be filled with Elvish joy and Halfling merriment! However, an unexpected publisher has ignited a Lord of the Rings board game, taking players off of the wide map of Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game and onto the board this festive season. As Games Workshop previews Lord of the Rings: Battle in Balin’s Tomb.
Before the Fellowship gets wrecked by the Balrog waiting in the wings, players will be able to reenact the iconic movie scene caused by the Rougish halfling, Pippin, being nothing short of Tookish!
Battle In Balin's Tomb // Games Workshop
Announced on the Warhammer Community, players will need to fight off the incoming horde of Sauron’s forces as they make their way through the twists and turns of the iconic mine.
Entering with the words of ‘Mellon’, 2+ players will take the role of the Fellowship, with the hopes of escaping the ruins of Moria taking on waves of many an enemy.
Fellowship Miniature Previews // Battle In Balin's Tomb
The box includes 22 multi-part plastic miniatures to help recreate the scene, and pay respects to the rotting tomb of Balin. Forcing out the forces of darkness, players will be provided with all nine members of the fellowship, twelve goblins and of course, they have a Cave Troll.
Utilising cards, dice and a gameboard, players will traverse into cavernous depths dwarven stronghold. In hopes of finding the exit before crossing the Bridge of Khazad-dûm.
There is no price announced just yet, but we can expect to see the new board game really soon according to Games Workshop. Right in time for Christmas, and in the midst of the Fellowship of the Ring anniversary.
It is interesting for Games Workshop to be releasing this particular battle in a board game format. I wonder if we can expect to see any more board-game battle recreations. What would you like to see? Is Weathertop out of the question?!

Okey so will there be more than a single tile? Because the article points towards one answer but in the image only one can be seen.
I think it’s a quad-folded gameboard, you can see the fold-lines so it fits inside the square box.
Nah, hard pass for me then, thanks for the info tho.
Looks interesting, but would it have been too much to ask for new figures. Maybe it is a way to keep the cost and price down…..or keep the cost down and the profits very very high? Who knows?
Using the same 20-year-old sculpts from the MESBG means they are indeed lowering costs as well as dangling a new entry-point for folks who might want to use the included miniatures to explore the MESBG main game. Like how Mantic use ‘Here’s Negan’ as a gateway to their Walking Dead All Out War game.
Also do they need new sculpts? Yes they’re old but IMO they’re still excellent
They are nice, the only weakness being the entire MESBG line are 25/28mm sculpts in a world of 28/32mm models, so they look a bit shrimpy on the table compared to more modern stuff.
That’s true though they’re in scale with the rest of the lotr range.
Possible bias from me as I’ve just ordered a ton of Goblin Town minis for Silver Bayonet.
GW is pretty much using this as way to get rid of some old miniatures that they had lying around.
I agree that this is a canny way for GW to sell some old sculpts but I also think this is a nice little starter game that would make a nice Xmas gift and be a nice find under the tree. It sounds like a quick play, comes with enough minis for someone dipping that toe into something different and has everything needed for a Boxing Day bash without not having too many fiddly tokens to be lost. The article mentions multi part kits which I think this would have been a good opportunity to supply push fit minis for… Read more »
I’m not 100% sure on the Fellowship but the evil side it’s just the troll and the shields on those goblins with them. I have assembled the troll but can’t remember whether it’s push fit or not (I think it is but my memory is pish).
Thanks. Good to know. Won’t be picking this up myself but can see it being popular with enough advertising and shelf space. ?
Ooh great looking figures for a fabulous part of the film.
RRP is £45.
