Mantic Games Help you take DreadBall on the Road!
August 31, 2012 by brennon
As if the main boxed game wasn't enough Mantic Games also have a variety of different accessories coming out to add to your DreadBall experience. Check out the first surprise, this utterly awesome looking Premium Acrylic Hex-Board!
As you can see this alternative to the main gaming board not only retains that Sci-Fi look but also breaks down into easily transportable components so you can cart it around to your local gaming club or mates house.
This will be great to have alongside your standard board, allowing you to have multiple games on the go at once. Let's get that league table sorted and start picking the teams now!
So don't forget to go show some support for DreadBall and grab this awesome new board in the process. The creator of the game Jake Thornton also has a great blog which you can go to and check out more in-depth discussion on this Sci-Fi sports game...
The official website for the game is also properly live now so go check it out as a hub of all things DreadBall.

portable board…sweeet
Who spends $85 dollars on something like this?
Before a game is even played widely and released?
Just intrigued.
We’ve been asking for this throughout the Kickstarter, but at a price point of 85$, I’ll pass….The board provided is good quality.
Still not sold on DreadBall, but that’s OK, seems many others are. 🙂
I agree w/ tony3. It’s nice, but not $85 worth of nice. The normal board will be just fine thanks. Besides…if the game comes in a box, and the board fits in the box, doesn’t it make the regular board ‘portable’ too?
The regular board that comes in the box will be made out of dark mater so will wiegh about the same as a 1,000 suns. 😉
Having worked with acrylic and acrylic cutting in retail in a past life, I’d say $85 comes in a little less than I would have expected. Compared to the price of what it’d cost me to make and I’m ok with it. Would I like it to be less? Of course, but I think it’s a fair price.
It’s not really a matter of whether or not the Acrylic pitch represents a “fair” value for what you get. I assume that It would be hard to manufacture a board like that in small quantities for a decent price. The problem is that we’re now looking at 200+ dollars for a what is essentially a “board game.” The acrylic pitch actually costs more than the game itself at this point. Dont get me wrong, I’m behind this 100%….I just think the acrylic board was a bit of a mis-step.
People were asking for it, though, myself included. I asked for it knowing what it would probably cost (and not wanting to do the $1500 pledge). I assume some people didn’t realize what the cost would likely be when they asked for it. I don’t think it’s fair to call it a mis-step when they deliver an option that was asked for at a decent price. It might be out of your price range or your comfort zone, sure, but that’s not a mistake on their part – it’s just you not thinking a mere board game has that value.… Read more »
If you want a cheaper option, you can also buy the exact same thing in MDF for only $25, so it’s not like Mantic isn’t trying their best to give people on a lower budget some options here.
The material is not the expensive part, the laser etching is, something which is a lot harder to do on acrylic.
So a free option (the board in the box) – a cheapish alternative (MDF) and an expensive alternative (plastic) – who can complain about choice, nice job Mantic 🙂
I wish all manufacturers would give that kind of variety on their games. Allowing you to have an in-the-box option which will be good quality, an inexpensive option for people who want to mock one up, and another for people who wanted the high-end acrylic pitch seems like something resembling…I dunno…meeting customers wherever their needs are? I confess to being a huge fan of Mantic, but I think it’s hard to see how you can call this a mis-step. (Oh…and the rules are incredibly cool. Looks to be a fun game, and Jake Thornton is going into tons of detail… Read more »
I must agree that the new board is expensive but its still sweet- Ill be trying the game this weekend (hopefully) so Ill know if its worth the money. Im glad there are several options for you to try re the board and the kickstarter is getting tempting. im holding off till after a demo game and also cos I didn’t really get excited by blood Bowl- the more “speedball” nature of this game should appeal more to me.
BB was to slow and to like the NFL and yet nothing like it for me
The demo game was good fun- no ref, cards or crowds plus limited turns and only 3 actions. Good enough for me to go check my bank balance tomorrow for KS options potential
