New 15mm Joan Of Arc Game Coming Soon From Mythic Games
February 27, 2017 by deltagamegirl22
As Cannes finished up and the news of new Batman Game from Monolith has captured our attention, Leo couldn't help himself and had to share even more awesome sneak peeks.
Even before we see Batman launch, they will have a new 15mm scale board game taking to Kickstarter by the end of the year - Time of Legends: Joan of Arc!
That's right - 15mm (mic drop). Just think of all the fantastic looking sculpts we've seen from them in Conan and most recently, Mythic Battles, and now picture a 15mm board game on hex tiles with incredibly detailed minis and fantastic terrain.
If you close your eyes, you can picture it, right? Let's take it a step further as Leo gave a sneak peek in the case at Cannes at some of the prototype goodies for the game. The minis are looking stunning and I'm super excited about the terrain!
Mythic Games will be demoing Joan of Arc at GenCon this fall and we will most definitely be checking it out!
What do you think of the latest gaming excitement from Leo?
"Mythic Games will be demoing Joan of Arc at GenCon this fall and we will most definitely be checking it out!"
There’s even a rumour going around that some Joan of Arc content was filmed at BoW Towers when Leo and Benoit were over there 🙂
Or at least the game was played when they were there.
😉 I’m REALLY looking forward to talking about this 🙂
And the first 15mm sculpts I have seen that rival 28mm for detail and crispness – and of course the art will make you wet your pants 🙂
So is that a denial or just a well played skirting of the issue?
Got its own Content Tag a bit quick ^^^ 😉
Yes, I have asked Leo and he confirmed it and they will start communicating as soon as the files for MB:P are gone to the printer.
I liked Joan of Arc but always felt she was getting too hot under the collar. 😉 ………..*yeah I know……….. *leaving ………………As others have said above this is a damn fine release ……. *What? Am I still here? …….*sorry…..* going
Very interested in this. I hope to see more about it very soon.
15mm is the new 28mm.. err 32mm
Will it be 15mm or 15mm heroic?
Most of the more recent 15mm ranges out there have been 18mm
I find it very off putting when companies misrepresent, or are at least inaccurate with the scale they give for their miniature ranges.
Miniatures scales always vary because unlike scale models, which are fairly stansardised, there’s no consensus on how to measure miniatures. So saying a miniature is 28mm for example doesn’t mean a great deal – some people measure from the feet to eye level and some ro the top of the head leading to significant variation in size within the 28mm scale between different manufacturers. This is true of all miniatures scales although it becomes less noticeable the smaller the size.
I sometimes wonder if miniatures sizes would be better expressed as a proper scale, like scale models.
The problem is that people call things like 28mm a scale, which it’s not.
A scale is 1/32nd, or 1/144th. It actually means something specific and checkable.
28mm, 15mm, or whatever is a size, and as you say, is measured differently by different people so means very little.
Endlessly frustrating, but not something that’s really fixable. Nor, perhaps, would we really want it to be fixed. If we did somehow enforce everyone using scales, and accurately rending human anatomy correctly, we lose the opportunity for style and artistic expression.
Scale isn’t the best word to use. Map scales and model scales actually mean something mathematically. 28mm is an indicator that a standard human will be about 2.8cm tall – and “about” is the key word there.
@onlyonepinman @quirkworthy Appreciate the feedback. I’m aware of the difference between mm indicative ‘scales’ and 1/X scales. I would prefer miniature manufacturers to express their scales in 1/X and i don’t see how doing so prevents artistic expression. There are a range of caveats that manufacturers could use such as ‘tolerance of X’, and ‘with heroicised parts’ ( which could be specific, i.e. ‘with heroicised hands, weapons and heads’ ). Also, there’s nothing to stop manufacturers expressing the scale of their miniatures in both forms. Tag wise i could see this kind of thing: ‘1/56 scale’, ‘heroicised’, ‘heroicised heads’, ’28mm’.… Read more »
It’s hard to say why companies have chosen this path. My thinking about the limits to artistic expression were assuming people actually stuck to the defined scale. Saying that it’s “heroic” (or whatever) 1/56th simply makes a nonsense of it being a scale as you simply give yourself license to ignore it.
Mind you, I’ve seen plenty of stuff claiming one scale and being something else. Even several different scales being used on the same model. In fact, that’s unfortunately quite common when it comes to vehicle kits.
@quirkworthy I can see that using the term ‘heroicised’ could give a certain amount of license to ignore the scale, but i wouldn’t give that license, as it were. At a minimum, if i’m going to consider buying miniatures, i would want the proportions to be reflective of the art and fiction of the thing that the miniature was representing, relative to the scale stated and other miniatures in the range. One game company i asked about the scale of their miniatures said that the scale they stated for their miniatures was technically incorrect ( 32mm instead of 28mm, or… Read more »
Also remember we’re talking about playing pieces here not display models, a lot of the ‘heroic’ stuff was to scale up pieces that would otherwise break etc. 🙂
Or be difficult to cast…
Of course, casting and other practical aspects play their part too.
I think what I’m saying is that if someone claims a scale, I expect them to stick to it. As soon as you start giving them leeway, then everyone has a different interpretation of how much and what that might be. And you’re back to square one…
@warzan
Also another understandable decision ( to make parts of a miniature less breakable for players ), just not one that suits my preferences. I would prefer my miniatures to be more to scale and would happily put up with them being more delicate for that. But then i’m someone who likes to paint irises and pupils on my miniatures. ( To be clear, i like to paint irises and pupils on the eyeballs, not just randomly everywhere. )
I’m also interested to know if they’ll go for heroic or more true to scale. It says ‘heroic’ in the tags, but i suspect that the BOW crew tag ‘heroic’ unless they know otherwise, and there’s something of a range in heroic proportions. Do you have any more information on this @deltagamegirl22?
It’s more like True proportioned (at least in the sculpts I saw)
I’m quite interested in this ( scale issues withstanding ). These miniatures look good from what i can see so far, and i think i could happily move from 28mm to 15mm if the detail had got up to a certain standard. For me the benefit is space saving, by which i mean both storage space, but more importantly gaming space. 15mm obviously gives one four times the amount of terrain to play across as 28mm does when using the same size gaming table, and at the same time i don’t think 15mm is small enough to need to use… Read more »
You can also tell bigger stories with the 15mm (And stories are absolutely central to this game)
Interested to know what you mean by this, both generally pertaining to 15mm games and more specifically with this game. I look forward to you talking about this game.
Looks interesting enough.
Another Monolith Kickstarter to back… damn you Leo… can´t wait for it ^^
Joan of Arc is a very entertaining game. I’ve played an early version already, and look forward to playing it again soon. The designer, Pascal Bernard, has done a great job, and knows ridiculous amounts about the period, so it’s steeped in character details of place and people. And monsters. Because it’s historical in that it’s how they *thought* the world was, not necessarily how we think it was 🙂
I don’t think I should spill too many beans just yet, but it’s worth noting that it’s not a straight up battle game. There’s much more going on than that…
Thanks QW for your reply and your endless work and responses on the MB:P KS Comments section and official forum. I will be watching as this evolves.
One item “historical” + “monsters” to me at least = Fantasy or Alt-History
Will keep watch for game play details.
The setting is historical, in the sense that the scenarios are (almost all) based on specific real events. However, the medieval mind being what it was, some of those real (and well documented) real events include things like werewolves.
So it’s not a fantasy or alternative history that we imagined, it’s the historical reality that the people at the time thought they were living through.
And remember: the namesake of the game is a young girl that is famous for seeing visions of angels. Do you think your reality and hers would dovetail perfectly?
And who would be right?
Is it going to be ‘true’ history or will there be a bit of ‘myth’ and the fantastic to the game ?
She was ‘on a mission from god’ … or so legend says, right ?
Werewolves.
True history. The village in question is still there 🙂
Reminds me of an import game I had on my PSP years back called Jeanne D’arc. It was amazing and this game looks in the same mould.
Looks interesting. Looking forward to burning the witch. 😉
You’ve got to catch her first 😉
the miniatures look great and the grid looks fantastic. its going to be really interesting to see how it plays.
Looks like a cool game but I can’t help seeing the Lion Rampant in 15mm possibilities.
I can’t wait to find out who else will be in the game and which troops will be included.
Hmm.. I certainly like the idea of this. But I’m still sceptical about 15mm and the fact that does look a bit like fantasy.
Looking forward to seeing more tho. I’m sure it’ll be a fabulous game regardless!
Models look fantastic, but the way the roads go corner to corner and then shoot sharply off every single time doesn’t look right or natural. Would look more pleasing going across the flats.
Aw man…
Why are these guys doing this to me?
At first, I thought “Joan of Arc… 15mm… whatever…”
But then, I watched Leo’s video from Cannes and they’ve got me tempted – again. Mythic have got to be the company to watch – if only for the love and enthusiasm that they have for their projects. I really love the way that they take well known settings, give them a little twist and then come up with something exciting.
I’m just glad that I have no interest in DC Comics superheroes!
15mm will be great for some epic historic battles?
For the faithful: Direct from the MB Facebook Page ” Mythic Battles: Pantheon Thank you! We’re just teasing the game. It’s called Time of Legends: Joan of Arc and it takes place during the War of 100 years, a medieval universe of war, conspiracy and betrayal, where myths mix with reality. All the beliefs of this ancient time are real (witches, werewolves, dragons, devil, angels…). Games can go from a single investigation in a little village with roleplaying game elements, to a mass battle involving dozens of knights, warriors and terrain. Each game lasts less than an hour. It is… Read more »
That’s very cool …
Although I do hope there’s an option for a more historical variant for those who aren’t into the mythical aspect of the setting.
There are several shades of historicity in the scenarios, with many being based on specific historical battles, ambushes, and so on. As I said above, the werewolf hunt scenario I played is based on a well-documented period account, so that’s historical too 🙂
We’ve also got a long way to go in developing the game and the scenarios we include. I expect we’ll have whole historical campaigns, with nary a dragon in sight…
Wow, this looks very cool. The previous offerin of monolith didný quite do it for me (I like conan well enough but not a huge fan, and mythic battles didn’t impress me on the gameplay), but the mini’s look awesome (I wanted to like mythic battles just to play with and paint those lovely mini’s).
If this game isn’t to complicated I might even get the missus to play. She quite likes the story of Joan of Arc.
This is one looks awesome! Will be paying close attention to this. I recently got stuck in to some 15mm vikings, loving 15mm more and more.
Will keep an eye on this…
