Blue Orange Games Follow-up on Kingdomino Success
August 1, 2017 by thisisazrael
Kingdomino, winner of 2017's Spiel des Jahres "Game of the Year" award and rated in the top thirty family games on BoardGameGeek, is getting a standalone sequel, that also doubles as an expansion.
Queendomino will again be designed by Bruno Cathala and carries on the light family take on dominoes seen in Kingdomino. The sequel takes a step up in complexity and strategic choices but retains all the simplicity of tile selection and building from its predecessor.
Players will find extra tiles to choose from and a new 7th colour in the form of Cities. Cities will not generate victory points directly but can be used in tandem with special buildings and combinations to boost your total.
Two to four players can play Queendomino as a standalone, but if combined with Kingdomino, you can please games with 7x7 grids for four players, or even up to six players if you play with the original 5x5 grids.
Bruno took to BoardGameGeek forums to write, "Queendomino is exactly the game I wanted to play MYSELF after having played hundreds of Kingdomino games".
For me, I think it's fantastic to see games designers openly engaging with their communities and showing what love for their game and continual play can lead to. With so many playthroughs under his belt, we can safely assume that Bruno will be adding some purposeful and exciting features with Queendomino.
Queendomino is expected to launch at Essen Spiel fair in October.
What do you think of expansions that work as standalone games?
