Hit Kickstarter For The Slay The Spire: The Board Game Project!
November 7, 2022 by brennon
Contention Games have hit Kickstarter like a sledgehammer with their project to fund the creation of Slay The Spire: The Board Game. Based on the hit strategic video game, this game has one-to-four players diving into a rogue-like adventure featuring unique Fantasy heroes.

In Slay The Spire, your characters will be challenged to move from room to room throughout the eponymous spire. As you do, you'll encounter packs of monsters, mini-bosses, boss creatures, places to rest/trade and more.
Slay The Spire: The Board Game - Components // Contention Games
The main thrust of the game is based on combat. During a turn, the players will choose how to spend their energy on cards in their hand, generating both damage and block that can be used to hurt their foes and make sure they don't get stomped in return. Players will deal with the individual monsters in their respective rows and once all enemies have been defeated, you'll move on and take your rewards.
Monsters will then strike back based on the roll of a die to determine their behaviour. Defeating foes and progressing further up the tower will unlock special upgraded cards from your deck and also tweak the cards in your hand. In this way, you'll twist and change your character's fate as you face a range of different foes.
If you want to know more about the rules then you can check out the Rulebook for yourself. There are also some neat videos up on the Kickstarter page worth checking out.
Slay The Spire - Kickstarter Pledges
There are a couple of neat options for pledges if this has caught your eye.
Slayer's Pledge // Slay The Spire: The Board Game
You could go down the route of the Slayer's Pledge which comes with all of the core elements you need to be playing the game. You can however go to the next level and pick up the Collector's Pledge which offers up a few more options.

There is also an All-In option for you to consider but that's only if you're totally sold on backing this campaign to the hilt. The offerings from the Slayer's Pledge look decent enough as it is!
Slay The Spire is a pretty darn well-regarded video game in its own right and so it was going to be interesting to see if the board game could offer a similar experience. From having read through the Rulebook and watching the videos discussing the game, it seems like they've nailed the puzzle.
Are you tempted to snap this up on Kickstarter?

This does sound like a good if strange game for playing.
