This week, Cass has a look at a handmade Dungeon Master storage box which is taking role-playing gaming into the modern age. Next, Cass and Gerry discuss the moral ambiguities of the OnTabletop team when faced with a post-apocalyptic world in RPG Monsterpunk!
Finally, Cass gets back to basics with a lo-fi legacy gaming book which is a must for mechanic fans!

I don’t often wax lyrical over wood, but that Dungeon Master’s box is spiffingly good.
Lo FI gaming is the way to go……
Monsterpunk sounds like an awesome idea – like really evil sounding Pokemon.
Friend once ran a Pokemon World of Darkness game. You will not know fear until you’ve heard the grass rustle and fondness yourself swarmed by Bellsprout.
That’s why you take Charmander as your starter and set the whole forest on fire beforehand. ?
Never mind the insanity of having kids use their pets attempt to kill other pets … for ‘fun’.
Dog fights are nasty enough in real life.
No need to imagine what would happen if these animals could shoot flames or lightning.
You probably only need to drop the cuteness of the series to turn it into horror.
And aren’t there supposed to be pokemon who use psychic attacks ?
*eep*
I don’t like pokemon, but now I do want a ‘realistic’ variant of that setting.
Don’t forget in that game kids get booted out to travel the world filled with such critters at ten. ?
Given that these kids have the strenght to lift these creatures I’m sure they’d be alreight 😉
It kind of makes me wonder what happens to the grown ups …
both cheapass games book an the dungeon box look great for gamers.
Turning a ‘cheap ass’ game into a deluxe version could be a hobby project.
Or maybe even re-theme it to something for friends ?
That’s the sort of thing you can’t always do to regular boardgames.
The Dungeon Box looks nice. But a) I don’t play RPGs anymore, b) it’s shipping from the US (which doubles the price for me) and c) it’s 8 magnets and 4 pieces of wood. Shouldn’t be to hard to recreate 😉
Nice idea but I’ll pass.
Every couple of months, a kickstarter likes this comes up and end up googling around to see if there’s a company at least on the same continent that does the same sort if thing yet.
Several years and still no luck.
I wonder how long it would take to learn all the wood crafting skills required?
With modern tech and youtube it’s probably more a matter of sourcing the right material and equipment.
otoh … buying an expensive cnc machine (think of them as 2D printers for wood) just to craft a single wooden box seems like overkill 😉
I bet it’s like a barbecue. You buy it once to use for a party and suddenly you’re cooking everything on it to justify buying it.
I feel your pain on the buying from an overseas Retailer. Unless it ships from China, the shipping from UK or EU is usually twice to three times the price of the item that I’m ordering. It hasn’t stopped me from ordering the things that I want, but it sure makes you think twice before clicking ‘Place the Order’.
If you have that amount of disposable income you can do it but for me often it’s “one thing from oversea o two things locally”. 😉
Dung box is expensive for a glorified pencil case…
And Monsterpunk really needs to get a decent artist… very simplistic and almost childish.
What’s wrong with simple and childish artwork?
