Head To Gearworld: The Borderlands With Fantasy Flight Games
February 11, 2013 by brennon
If you're looking for another board game then how about this exciting new project from Fantasy Flight Games. See what you think of their steampunk looking post-apocalyptic game, Gearworld: The Borderlands...
"In days before, the gears still turned and the old machines still worked. The sky was clear and blue, and life flourished. Then noxious clouds came and choked the air. Smoke blanketed the sky. Some people departed in flying cities, ascending above the clouds to the World Above. Others dug deep beneath the ground, vanishing into the World Below. Meanwhile, those in the Borderlands watched the world grow dark as the gears ground to a halt."
Once again this is a re-imagining of a previous game with Fantasy Flight saying they have streamlined the experience. Two to four players will be negotiating, conquering and building to earn the favour of the Sky People!
It sounds like a fantastic game with an awesome aesthetic. Everyone loves a bit of world building and considering the way in which you must gain access to resources this should change with each group of people you play alongside.

World building + Steampunk sounds great but sadly I would get enough use out of it for the investment all things being equal 🙁
Really nice looking game, but sadly with over 250 games in production, on kick-starter and the huge collection already on the market and ready to come out of kick-starter. Where does someone start to decide what to buy? Personally, I have funded Rivet Wars but would like to get gears of War, Relics Knights, Kingdom death, Zombicide and more Star Wars stuff. I think you can’t decide what is hot and what is not by looking at a single game on its own. Perhaps a comparison of similar games would be more beneficial at the moment? Thanks for bringing this… Read more »
I think a comparison is a really good idea. It’s easy to say, “Here’s a cool game on kickstarter! Check it out!” But is that all you would do for a game that’s already out? I think some critical analysis of these different games would help cut through an awful lot of the hype and crowdfunded euphoria. It’s not about trashing some games and blessing others so much as it is about comparing them on a set of meaningful data points that a person could use to determine which, if any, actually interested them, and which might be more fun… Read more »
Although I am not in a position to fund kickstarters I have to say I agree with both of you.
I find the sheer volume and rapidity of schemes overwhelming. It makes my head spin just watching from the outside as it were!
