Great Western Trail’s Board Game Trilogy Heads To Argentina
July 6, 2022 by brennon
Great Western Trail is a brilliant board game of moving cattle across the tabletop and looking to sell them for the highest price at the market. The original is a stalwart in my group's collection and it recently got an updated version with 2021's second edition. This year, they are heading to Argentina.

Stepping away from the classic Old West setting, the next expansion is going to head to South America and explore the country of Argentina. The same game mechanics from Great Western Trail are back featuring deck management (of your herd of cows), the rondel mechanics and the ability to upgrade not only your player board but also the game board you're all using.
A new type of worker joins the cause though, the farmers. There are more choices to make here. Do you skirt past them or do you use your hard-earned cattle to get your hands on a new resource, grain, which can be used for different boat and city tiles.

There will also be shortcuts and different passages you can explore that will make your journey to Buenos Aires that little bit easier. Much like with the original game, you will still have to manage your stations and build up a supply network when you reach the end of the board and get ready to cycle back to the beginning. Port tiles also add to the tactical conundrum as you work out what's best for you.
It seems like Great Western Trail: Argentina pushes things to the next level and offers up a more tactical and challenging puzzle that is worth delving into. There is even a solitaire solo game mode where you play against Pedro in "The Way Of The Gaucho" as you try and beat his score!
This is also just the second game in the trilogy. After this, Great Western Trail is heading to New Zealand in 2023!

Ooh nice get off your horse and drink your sangria.
I have stayed away from Great Western Trail because I really dislike the theme.
That being said, 5 days ago I played it for the first time.
The gameplay is solid and challenging but unsurprisingly I could not buy into the theme of the game. Consequently my experience was somewhat less than that of the other players.
I am hopeful that the “Great New Zealand Trail”, is themed around sheep or Hobbits. Either of which makes this game and its mechanics (which I do like) a contender for game night.
