Gloomhaven: Jaws Of The Lion; A Perfect Dungeon Delving Option?
June 23, 2020 by brennon
Cephalofair Games has started to let previews drip forth for their new take on Gloomhaven, Jaws Of The Lion. Whilst the BIG Gloomhaven box and Frosthaven are immense investments of both time and money, Jaws Of The Lion is seeking to be a much easier entry into this world which is very beginner-friendly.
Gloomhaven: Jaws Of The Lion // Cephalofair Games
This version of Gloomhaven sits alongside its big-box brothers but is an entirely self-contained adventure. Designed for one-to-four players, Jaws Of The Lion gives you just four characters to choose from and condenses the sprawling multi-threaded adventure from the other games into a single narrative which flows forward from scenario to scenario.
There are branching stories for you to explore, but because the campaign is focused and tight-knit it means that the narrative is easy to follow and you'll have a definitive end point for your adventures. Then, of course, these characters could even find their ways into other adventures too.

Just because Jaws Of The Lion isn't as big as Gloomhaven of Frosthaven doesn't mean that it's not worth picking up. With its awesome map-based scenarios taking away the stress of building combat encounters and lots still to explore through the development of your characters and its unfolding narrative, this seems like the perfect way to experience Gloomhaven's mechanics without dropping nearly £100.
If you're interested in the game, make sure to check out this rules explanation from Watch It Played...
This gives you the basics of gameplay and then subsequent videos are going to look at the more detailed mechanics players need to know. It should be noted that, even if you do have the big Gloomhaven box, this could be a lot of fun too with its additional characters and more laser-focused narrative.

looks a good game does the city map fit into a Polly pocket to make it reusable.
Watched a number of the previews from Rahdo, Quackalope and others that appeared at the start of the week. I didn’t buy into Gloomhaven or Frosthaven as they appear too ‘heavy’ – literally/physically and from a game management perspective.
This looks like the ideal compromise! Waiting to see who else offers pre-orders before buying very soon. Plenty to occupy us before October though!
