Games Workshop Unbox The New Blood Bowl & Show Off The Teams!
October 13, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop has set up a new website dedicated to giving you everything you need to get stuck into the new Blood Bowl. Same rules, new models and a fancy looking set for fans of Fantasy Football.
One of the things everyone's been waiting for is a proper look inside the box. Now, we've seen images like this before...
...but now the wonderful James Hewitt has been joined by Andy Hoare to go through the contents during the video here.
Blood Bowl Unboxing
Following on from that you'll need to know how to play. So, the team at Games Workshop have put together a video showing off the basics. A selection of downloads are available HERE already giving you a look at the teams.
Blood Bowl Basics
We knew that you were going to get Humans and Orcs in the main boxed game but another of the new teams has also been shown off in a preview for the Skaven. Each of their team videos are included below giving you an idea of how they play on the tabletop.
Humans
Orcs
Skaven
It's all looking very impressive and they have a BIG booth set up at Essen Spiel to talk about the game and show it off.
Have you been tempted in by the new edition of Blood Bowl? With familiar rules and plenty of nice updated models, this should be a nice bit of a nostalgia hit for those who miss the old game and want to see it officially supported by Games Workshop again.
Let us know in the comments!

Oh cool, it’s going to be at SPIEL Essen! That’s unexpected, their stand in the previous 2 years was a bit lame (just Forge World selling some items).
Bit of a maths fail by Andy there lol
I like the double sided board. that was a nice idea, and all the components look solidly built. Will be interested to see what the trap door spaces mentioned will do in game. Hopefully they won’t deviate too much from the original as it is a classic and one of the first games from GW I played as a child. My only lament is that the plastics don’t look as great as I had hoped. With any luck they will offer metal versions of the teams as I don’t really like plastic in general. If not then at least there… Read more »
I don’t see the stuff being anything other than plastic which to me at any rate, looks absolutely fine, especially with regards to the Skaven team.
I’ll certainly buy a team or two, if not the box; I enjoy the game, and hopefully if it sees enough support, we get more teams and the return of other things (Nercromunda plzzzzzzz).
The event cards coming back sound like a lot of fun, and it’ll be interesting to see what those trapdoors (Berk, Boni, Drutt) are about.
GW dosen’t cast anything in metal, all BB miniatures will be in plastic or resin.
Sisters of battle and Inquisition are still metal
Fair, I suppose. But they aren’t making anything new in metal or finecast- the new stuff is all plastic from GW or resin from FW.
Wish they weren’t though, would love to see them get the plastic treatment, judging by the amount of stuff people sell on eBay, guess my sisters aren’t popular enough.
Skagen look great, might have to find a way to get them into my Ratkin army.
No matter how I see this thing going, it doesn’t end well for me…
They release the game, I buy it…
They release new teams, blisters, add-ons etc. I buy them all….
I have to sell possessions and organs to keep up with the intense GW release schedule, even though I use about 10% of it all….
I’m homeless, hungry and naked. surrounded by tiny plastic miniatures….
Still going to buy it though!!
That’s the spirit!
I’m sure it’s a fun game but BB is pretty much the only GW specialist game that never really interested me. But apparently there is a big market for fantasy football so this is bound to be a success commercially..
I’ll be waiting for Mordheim and Battlefleet Gothic to reappear 😎
Ah good to see James is still alive, was starting to worry GW had completely chewed him after after making the move over from Mantic 😉 Can’t say I’m personally interested in Bloodbowl, the American Football feel of the game just doesn’t do it anymore compared to other games available on the market. Interesting to see GW truly taking the boardgamer, rather than wargamer, approach for this release with coloured teams and double poses. Feels a tad corner cutty compared to their other boxed games, but will undoubtedly sits better with the boardgamers crowd they so desperately seem to be… Read more »
My guess is the cost will be around the £75 mark. It doesn’t have the large amount of minis that the more expensive boxes have had. Could be wrong, though.
They would be fools not to market this to the board game crowd. It’s always about inroads into the bigger games that GW own. This is definitely one of those inroads, I assure you that.
And Blood Bowl has a very high ranking on Board Game Geek.
The football skin has always been against this game. I personally dislike American football, I’m not interested in any of the other fantasy sports games, but Blood Bowl is an excellent game.
It’s about time this hit the shelves!
Return of BB is everything I could had hoped for and more.
This is fantastic!!! The return of one of the last classic GW I played before I decided to “grow up” … (Don’t worry folks it only lasted less than a decade then I “got better” ……. Maturity . PFFFFAGHHH) So happy this is back!!!! The last thing I looked forward to as much was that shot of penicillan in the pox doctor’s waiting room) Fantastic !!!!!
I was just about to write something very similar!
Blood Bowl was one of the games I used to LOVE when I got into this stuff the first time around.
Although I’m more into the wargaming now, I may be tempted to pick this up again if the price is right. The boardgame label may entice some of my non-gaming friends to play… then, once they’re successfully sucked in, I’ll take them deeper into my little world! Muahahahaa!
Sneaky way to get them knee deep.
Yep, before they know it, their houses will be crawling with miniatures and little pots of paint too! 🙂
Oh one other thing. The BB logo on the number 6 side of the dice. Lets all give GW a hand for finally cluing in on what number the logo goes on for custom dice 😛
So great to see the content of a game that meant to be a huge hit. But what about the price. Does anyone know it?
Really, really excited for this. I just need a release date.
Blood Bowl… this is going too be expansive for me, got to collect ’em all.
And it sure looks like GW is going to put a lot of effort into this line.
Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this.
I love James, which is why it pains me to see him presenting Blood Bowl when he was the one who introduced me to Dreadball!!!! Betrayed. Man crush.
:'(
Awesome, a completely new GW, since our man James LH, transferred across the road
If Blood bowl is a spin off game then it exists in a vacuum surely as WFB is dead? Bit of a philosophical question more than anything. Furthermore are the rules outdated now? Are they only going to be good for nostalgia. I never played Blood bowl growing up and wouldn’t get that nostalgia hit, but would like to try it all the same. Honest answers appreciated 🙂
The mainstream of Warhammer Fantasy diverted from Blood Bowl some time ago, so it’s existed for some time in a sort of parallel Warhammer setting (not literally, I must add, though with AoS I guess it could be in its own pocket of reality now lol). As to your other question, I am of the opinion that the rules are outdated. I wouldn’t want the rules to be totally overhauled to make them into a truly modern game as much of the feel of Blood Bowl would likely be lost in the process, but a few tweaks to speed things… Read more »
Cool, thanks for getting back to me on that one. Tempting for sure.
I’ve been playing recently, and I cannot agree that the rules feel outdated. The rules have previously been updated into the Competition Rules Pack (official GW rules written by Jervis and a commitee of fans- there were six iterations). As I understand it, those rules are the basis of the new edition (the new cards they mention are in the rules set). The presentation of the rules is super outdated. The old rulebooks had this way of putting many of the core game mechanics into an “Optional Rules” section- along with a number of things that actually were optional. If… Read more »
Agreed, BB has a good rule set that was just presented in an outdated fashion. If it’s rules were ineffective then it would not have retained the following it still has.
In many ways I don’t agree with the idea of rulesets and systems as being ‘outdated’. As long as they achieve their goals and simulate a setting in a fun manner I think they will stand the test of time as to whether they are a ‘good game’ or not. Different trends and design philosophies come and go, it’s the consumers conceptions/objectives/limitations that makes a game feel outdated.
Yeah, when they first introduced the turnover rule Bloodbowl and I parted ways. But when I came back to it years later as a computer game, I saw it in a fresh light. I have to say it does make Bloodbowl different, something more than just another set of rules for moving miniatures around a board/table. Also, more importantly, it does make it feel like American Football – you drop the ball, that’s your play over for now.
Great looking box I just wish they updated the rules.. The game feels really dated mechanically, things have moved on a lot in the past 10 or so years and they really missed an opportunity.
Same here. I really wish GW ditched some of their ancient rulesets. It’s inevitable, might as well do it now. Sure, some hardcore fans would scream and cry, but:
A: If they want to play the same game over and over, they are welcome to use the new miniatures with old rulebooks
B: Fans scream and cry no matter what
C: It’s going to be harder and harder to find NEW fans when GW is no longer the only option and competitors have way better designed games
I think BB is one of the few classics that really do stand the test of time. I’ve played it last a few years back and really enjoyed it. Then my skaven got decimated in that fatefull game.
Starting to feel like painting my Norsks….
When can we pre-order this box of fun and violence?
the reason the rules have not been updated is because the BB community have kept this game alive for many years without support. so when GW decided to release this box they actually listened to this community whose biggest fear was that they were going to come along and destroy the game they love by reinventing the mechanics.
full marks to the team involved for respecting the fans!
Looks awesome. Torn between the Orcs and Skaven. Hoping for Chaos Warriors, Daemons, and Dark Elves.
I’m an NFL fan, so this game is right up my street. It’s pretty clear from the promos that GW want this game to succeed, and set the bar for the rest of the new Specialist Games range.
I’m pre ordering this as soon as it appears on their store. I used to play Blood Bowl when I was younger, played Humans and Undead. Might go for the Orcland Raiders this time, but I think I will resurrect (HA!) my undead players.
Boring….
Same old GW just rehash the same thing over and over again.
Why don’t they bring out something new for a change. Jumping in on the success of the Mantic game which revived the American football based wargames market.
In case you haven’t already guessed I won’t be buying this rehashed relic, should have left it to RIP.
BB has always had a thriving community, even when GW stopped supporting it.
The community did not want the rules changed too much as it’s always been popular.
I’m not sure Mantics recent KS for Dreadball would indicate that it had had the level of success your trying to indicate. And it certainly will not outsell BB.
There’s some very odd thinking going on here; Mantic revived American football based wargames? I’m sure companies like Black Scorpian, or Greebo miniatures, or Willy Miniatures, or FF-Fields, etc.. have done more to keep games like BB going. Dreadball (which sold itself as Bloodbowl in space, so really if anybody is piggybacking on someone else, then it’s Mantic) on the other hand, hasn’t helped at all, because it uses a setting, board, set of rules that are incompatible with nearly all of the other third party support that has kept BB going. Rehash the same thing over and over again?… Read more »
First up, DreadBall ain’t American Football, in any way, shape or form. And Blood Bowl never stopped being incredibly popular, regardless of what DreadBall was doing. Trust me on that!
Second, same thing over and over again? Ahem:
