Games Workshop Drop Loads Of New Reveals At NOVA 2018
August 30, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop has dropped loads of new reveals at NOVA this year for a range of their games, both old and new. The first thing we're going to jump into is more on Speed Freeks which has had a lot of people very excited.
Speed Freeks is going to be a high-orktane (sigh) game of racing and destruction set within the world of Warhammer 40,000. The set will bring together the Shokkjump Dragsta and the Kustom Boosta-blasta but also allow you to throw in a range of the new Buggies too for some extra carnage.
I can see this one being a lot of fun. Increasingly I'm getting the idea from a lot of gamers that they're stepping away from the core games of Age Of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 and instead embracing these smaller games on the sidelines as they offer them a chance to play within these worlds without a massive investment.
As you can see the vehicles are looking superb for this game and I imagine they are going to be exceptionally customisable as you crack our your Bitz Box to have a bash like a proper Mek Boy.
Hopefully, we get a chance to check this out in the studio. With all of the desert/badlands boards we're working on for the Bolt Action Boot Camp these Orks would have the proper sandy landscape to race over.
Sisters Of Battle Preview
Beyond the weapon previews that we saw from Warhammer Fest Europe, we now have some excellent previews of the heads for the upcoming Sisters Of Battle.
They are looking great and it's nice to see that as well as some old favourites (the helmets to the top right) we also have some bare heads in a variety of different expressions.
The Adepta Sororitas will be coming to Chapter Approved later this year as part of a Beta Codex which will give you a peek into how the Sisters Of Battle are shaping up.
Knightly Heroes
Sticking with the Imperium for a little longer we also got a note that we should be seeing House Griffith soon for those players who love their Imperial Knights.
This comes alongside a new set of upgrades for your Imperial Knight and a heroic individual in Sir Hekhtur too. I must admit I haven't really been following the development and growth of the Imperial Knights in Warhammer 40,000 but the new bits and bobs look very nice indeed!
To finish off for the world of Warhammer 40,000 we also have some Warhammer Quest news. Yes, the iconic dungeon crawling adventures of their Fantasy realms are coming to the grimdark future.
Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress sounds like an awesome endeavour and hopefully the team take some of the lessons learned from Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal to create this game. I can already hear all of the rustles in the background as hundreds of hobbyists get ready to find out more.
Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault
Moving away from Warhammer 40,000 we also got the full reveal of the new set for Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault. The story continues to expand and now the Stormcast Eternals find themselves facing off against the Nighthaunt in the Mirrored City.
The new warbands in the set are looking awesome as the Briar Queen leads her warband of Chainwrasps...
...against Averon Stormstrike and his Sacrosanct Chamber Wizards.
This means that we're going to be seeing a whole new set of mechanics thrown into the mix for Underworlds. Spells add another layer of tactical decision making to the mix for Shadespire which will no doubt shake up the tournament scene for the game.
I really like the design of the models for this new Warhammer Underworlds set and I might end up having to buy the Core Box like I did the last time. I didn't play the game too much but it was a lot of fun when I did get a chance, even without a lot of deckbuilding and the like.
We also have some quirky new Warbands making their way to Warhammer Underworlds. The Troggoth from earlier in the week meets a Flying Squig!
I could see this being a lot of people's favourite warband if they get it right. I am looking forward to seeing where the Grots/Spiderlings come in!
Demons Rise
As well as the news from Warhammer Underworlds we also have a teaser for what's next in Age Of Sigmar. Slaanesh returns?
We shall have to wait and see but it looks like Chaos is on the rise, especially concerning the news about Beastmen at the start of the week.
Returning To Middle-earth
The new Starter Set for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game lands this weekend but Games Workshop was keen to share more news including a look at a fantastic new model showing Gandalf & Pippin on horseback showing off one of the pivotal moments from the films.
This new model arrives alongside news that we will be getting a set of Campaign Books for the game starting with Gondor At War.
What's included in this book?
"Gondor At War covers the events of the War of the Ring as it sweeps across Gondor, from the ambush at Ithilien and the fall of Osgiliath to the Battle of Pelennor Fields and the march on the Black Gate of Mordor itself. You’ll find tactical primers, loads of scenarios and rewards for theming your army to the forces that fought in this time of war – like King Théoden’s final epic charge."
The future is bright for Middle-earth it seems!

TURN SIGNALS ON A LAND RAIDER IS COMING BACK!!!! Why isn’t that in the news!? TSOALR FTW! (Sorry, am excited… will be okay momentary)
True it’s the most important news of all. Second is the flying squig which is also missing here.
Flying Squig added!
Thanks, you’re awesome!
TSOALR was ace and its crushing by GW back in the day was one of the beginning moves of what I call their “douchebag period”. That it is coming back (which implies GW have given it their blessing) is a great sign of how far GW have come this last couple years in understanding how customer relations and brand management work in the internet age.
That Gandalf and Pippin model will be mine. Just for the sake of painting it. Great work!!!
I am liking those head option for SoB. Those really give hope for spring when they are going to get they plastic kits and Codex. That new Imperial Knight and it’s pilot do look really good. Speed Freeks and those Ork vehicles that come with it also look really good and nicely Orky. Gandalf and Pippin on horse back looks great and could be center piece of any LotR collection. It’s also refreshing model to see after seeing so many of those overly busy AoS models. Those Underworld ghosts look just okay after we have seen so many of similar… Read more »
HAHAHA! Games Workshop you fools you have fallen victim to my master scheme! Yes, continue to pillage the vaults of your legacy games to reissue new updated products and games… Soon, soon there will be but one game remaining in your depleted inventory… Then, you will have no choice but to finally bring back Mordheim!
Ahem.. Pardon me… Carry on everyone.
Speed Freeks does look like it will be a good romp though 🙂
High Orktane :’)
Gandalf/Pippin just caused a major nerdgasm. Beautiful model.
Yay a Franky Cook SoB? the trantransfer sheet is good the new an re-releasted models are looking brilliant.
There’s my other two Evocators and new Knight Incantor variant!
Well thats new Knights my 60th birthday present to myself sorted then!
and @brennon its orks bad puns are the norm , and your only upset because you didnt do it 1st!
Interested in 40K Warhammer Quest. Hopefully it’ll be PvE.
I’m interested too – very interested in fact – however I prefer a human overlord (i.e. Hammerhaal) to the AI deck (Silver Tower).
So maybe SpeedFreeks is more similar to GorkaMorka than I had originally thought. It certainly seems to be a little more involved than a simple race around a track. I’m still interested
Well…GW has a lot to offer these days. But I am really sad that they streamline the hell out of everything. Even Orks now look neat and tidy…so sad that everything must be nice and mainstream compatible. Those speed freak kits look great…but not like real Ork made stuff…far from it 🙁
Im not a fan of rules streaming.
However, these orks actually look cool. I am all for this kind of a change. Ive always hated the fact the ork truck just looks like trash.
Blackstone Fortress sounds like a belter, and the Ork buggy game can just take my money.
That foot!
Lots to look forward to for me 🙂 I wonder if the Theoden model will be available outside of the Pelenor Fields box – I hope so but suspect not. That new Gandalf miniature is lovely though.
I really like the Briar Queen miniature – Shadespire has some truly gorgeous miniatures.
But for me the most exciting announcement is Blackstone Fortress.
Right lets get the bitch out the way first, it is possibly pedantry, but if you say big reveal provide some substantial information not a bunch of teasers. Ok Speed freeks I am loving the look of the minis, and if done right the game could be a blast. The comparative sparse contents for speed freeks makes me concerned the price point may be a little wonky – hopefully no more Ork tax a’la the free booters, I am hoping it is more of an intermediate cost game. The rest of the 40k stuff doesn’t really appeal, Blackstone could be… Read more »
OK, the return of Slaanesh is getting me all excited.
Yes, I missed you.
Looking forward to more of this.
