Games Workshop Bring Back Lost Patrol Board Game
March 16, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop have announced via ICv2 that they are going to be bringing back Lost Patrol, a board game where Space Marine Scouts have to take on ambushing alien Genestealers...
"The new game is a two-player game with one side taking on the roles of Space Marine Scouts hunted by the other player controlling a group of fearsome Genestealers. Played out on a dynamic, tile-based board, the squad of Marines must navigate a jungle that moves and changes as they travel the board.
The game has updated rules from the original 2000 game and is just as fast-paced as the original, playing in about thirty minutes."
Behind the rules of the original game game we had Jake Thorton. Alas he doesn't have much to do with this re-make of the game. So, what do you get inside the box?
- 5x Space Marine Scouts
- 12x Genestealers
- 6x Infestations
- 30x Map tiles
- 3x Dice
- Rules
This sounds like a neat cut down tactical board game experience well worth exploring. Did you play the original game?
If you did, drop your thoughts below...

It’s Jake Thornton and the article alludes to the original game design being by him. Is he involved in the new version?
I would guess no
But it would be cool if he was.
He is not –

Find it somewhat interesting how in under a year GW have practically become a board game company… execution force, calth, overkill now this, and assuming space hulk will be back, along with what ever the SPuDs bring out, if they bring back WH: Quest i will be a very happy person
I guess the idea is that these board games can be used as gateway games. i.e. it’s a way to get people to try out the setting and some of the rules in the hope they get more interested in other things GW does. GW used to this many years ago, but then they streamlined things to basically 40k / Fantasy (maybe include LotR?). As I’ve said elsewhere, GW seem to be making a bunch of good decisions; while some of the boardgames are expensive, you actually get a tonne of stuff for your money; Overkill is 50 (imo very… Read more »
@fleety Fully agree with you, with the exception of calth which im a bit ambivalent towards, think i just dont care enough about old mk power armour and the plastic contemptor could have been so much more if it had more posability options out of the box, have quite a nice army of imperium allies to bolster my blood angels with execution force and overkill. My point is in the 20 odd years of plastic crack addiction i dont think i can remeber GW concurrently supporting so many board games (space hulk and WH : Quest arent board games in… Read more »
I see these as only partially gateway, and at least as much to serve a similar but wider role as army book releases. They generally come with a bunch of new minis, and unlike army books you can’t choose not to buy the minis. Release about one a quarter to let wallets recover and aim to get a nice windfall in the first few weeks of release, hope to sell off the remaining stock, and then rotate out. That they can be bought and used by people who have no interest in/have given up on 40K just widens the net.… Read more »
I got into 40k through Advanced Space Crusade which I thought was about Space-Punks vs Dinosaurs (Scouts vs Tyranids)
before that I was into Crossbows and Catapults – so that was a big leap
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this analysis.
Yes and no, they sure bring out more boardgames than they did the last decade(s) in the past year, the output is not what worries me, its logical for them to go slow on a new market segment, the components on the other side are questionable, Spacehulk was on the edge of having boardgame models, sprues do not go well with boardgamers but assembly was reasonable, no glue required, their other boardgames are essentially wargame models packed in a boradgame, this does not sit well with boardgamers. Yes, I will agree there are boardgamers that are also wargamers and GW… Read more »
I think these are aimed at the miniature gaming market more than the boardgaming market. FFG produce GW IP games for boardgamers. These are a way to sell minis.
Which means they don’t want to leave their comfort zone, an essential thing at the direction they are heading.
They could split the miniature boardgames and more traditional boardgames between them and FFG, but releasing these for the miniature gaming market and not the boardgames market shows a lack of faith and reluctance to leave a comfort zone.
As long as the gaming pieces are miniatures that you at least need to assemble then the product is going to be for the miniature gamers market. Both Mantic and Ninja Division were forced to start releasing their miniatures boardgames with pre-assembled minis else boardgame distributors wouldn’t carry them. FFG’s forays into miniature gaming has been at least pre-assembled, if not pre-painted.
I do not understand if we say anything different or we disagree.
Yes miniatures come in parts and companies assemble them, agreed, and GW could do that, they could also design the models to be at least snap to fit.
It was just that aiming for the boardgame market rather than the miniature games market would need them to change how they manufacture the minis that come with the game. So until and unless they do that, it’d be pointless marketing this to anyone other than minis gamers.
I honestly can’t understand why Warhammer Quest isn’t here yet.
Although, I’d also prefer an updated version that can be completely coop- but GW aren’t super great at having contemporary rules sets, so I can’t say that’ll happen.
Possibly because Specialist Games has only been a team for about 3 months? It’s going to take time for them to start generating a steady stream of releases, deciding what to re-release and what to make new; WHQ probably needs more work to re-release than many of their old games (possibly excepting Mordheim) because the world in which it is based in has been totally rewritten
I don’t even remember it!
i hope they’re regular genestealers so i don’t have to grab even this!^^
Well that’s interesting news.
I think the original figures for this game were single-piece scouts cast in a bright red plastic
wonder will they do new starter figures that are easy to assemble?
maybe genestealers like the original Space Crusade ones?
I was playing X-Wing on a coffee table ten minutes after opening the box –
a near instant GW game would be great 🙂
From my self i really like their new board game Death Overkill and did not know about this one , and for me it’s just perfect size cause the Warhammer 40 need a mutch bigger room to be able to play it and also need a lot of time to paint alllllll the minis so ill probably have a look at this game , thats good news for me 🙂
“I guess the idea is that these board games can be used as gateway games”
They are partly to hook people into buying miniatures.
For a second there I was excited to see Jake do something on one of this older games, unfortunately he isn’t involved (not that he hasn’t enough other projects on his plate).
Straight from Jake:

Edited the above story to take that into account
It would be cool if the scouts were mean looking punks or thugs…
a lot of the new Deathwatch had no helmets so they could have more ‘character’
Gateway games? Yeah, sure, only if you buy them in the small window of opportunity that they’re available since all the previous ones are limited editions. They’re aimed at the miniatures people, not really new customers. If I can find the Deathwatch or Assassin games in, say, a year’s time on a LGS shelf, then I might then think “Gateway”.
What is this? State the obvious day? Who would buy a game like Deathwatch and pay £80+ and not be interested in miniatures? If you’re going to tell me, the only people who bought Deathwatch or Betrayal at Calth, were people already invested in GW, then you’ll have better luck trying to sell me a bridge. It can’t be a board game because it’s got mini’s in it? It can’t be a gateway game because it isn’t in some LGS? You get a bunch of mini’s cheaper than you normally would, it takes place on a board, and the rules… Read more »
And you’re basing this theory on what? Space Hulk was Limited ed. and GW shouted it from the rooftops. Execution Force (which was released in July last year) is still available, so is Betrayal at Calth. Hell, even Dreadfleet was still available at two LGS I visited this year.
And it’s a moot point either way, GW are releasing boardgames quite regularly so in a year’s time they’ll probably have a few new ones on offer. They’ll still act as a ‘gateway’.
As far as I know, Deathwatch and Betrayal at Calth aren’t limited editions.
Nice to see oldies and Specialist Games ressurected but :
– Space Hulk : Space Marines vs Genestealers
– Deathwatch : Space Marines vs Genestealers
– Lost patrol : Space Marines vs Genestealers
Isn’t it a bit redundant?
Fortunately Blood Bowl will be back.
A new edition of Mordhein would be great too.
Let’s not forget :
– Warhammer 40k : Space Marines vs Genestealers
– Age of Sigmar : Space Marines vs not Genestealers
😉
I’d like to see :
Sisters VS Hrud
Necrons VS Enslavers
Deathwatch VS Slaugth
so, you know, being really realistic here 😛
jokaero v arbites 😛
% scouts vs 12 Stealers? That’s some dead scouts then.
5 Scouts vs 12 Stealers? That’s some dead scouts then.
they look a bit like baby genestealers in the art?
Never played LP but looks & sounds like a new version of advanced space crusade?
die-quick scouts vs monstrous Tyranids and Zoats – that was Advanced Space Crusade
the tiles were really big with winding passages and chambers – so it was like instant scenery with restricted LOS and more close combat than Space Hulk allowed, with its long passages and square rooms
don’t remember zoats & though hor/termagrants were in the game?
I hope they do good forest tiles for Lost Patrol – ones that I can use for X-Wing Endor games
LP, should be named ” The Day of The We Ran Like Bitches ”
Come on! 5 scouts vs 12 genestealers, are you serious?
I’m just waiting for the Blood Bowl to get here. Now that is gonna be awesome!
Brother G
Hmm, if it’s priced sub £50 at third party retailers, this may be a not so lost patrol after I’ve had my way! 🙂
Here (http://image.bolterandchainsword.com/uploads/gallery/album_9011/gallery_74115_9011_759931.jpg) you can see a picture of the sprues and the box.
Standard Scouts and Genestealers sprues though the scouts are coloured red.
Hang on is that a new bloodbowl box poking out behind the lost patrol box? looks like its shrink wrapped whatever it is…
Well spotted!
that must be their unreleased games room – anyone noticed that new spruce are sometimes dated years ago – 2012?
its like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRGCZh5A8T4
no new models then 🙁
any new release had its design signed off (hence copyrighted) at least 18 months before release, if nothing else the legal IP protection stuff will take an age, its not like you can hurry a lawyer, never mind getting moulds made, artwork commissioned, production kinks ironed out, produce sufficient stock for world wide coordinated release, package said release, produce translated copies and ship said stock all over the world. On top of that been told that GW have a rolling sales schedule meaning they can chop, change and rescedule releases based on sales, i.e. mechanicum was rumored for an autumn… Read more »
