The Last Kingdom Board Game can be played by two-to-five players and was designed by John D Clair. The kingdoms of Britain are riven by war with invading Danes coming from the North and East whilst King Alfred tries to unite the Saxon kingdoms against a common threat, moving away from their petty infighting. During the game, you'll take on the role of one of these Leaders which come with their own unique powers and benefits that will help you with your strategy.

The game plays out throughout two rounds where you'll be focusing your attention on each of the five regions to see who can take command and turn the different factions to their will. You'll draft cards from a deck specific to that round and then see how the war plays out in one of the five regions, using your cards to command Saxon and Dane armies to suit your needs.

Once each player has taken their actions, be that backstabbing their "friends" or simply commanding armies and earning an affinity with those forces, you will all pass and the war will be played out. You will see if the Saxons or the Danes came out on top and if you were aligned with the winning faction, they will gain victory points. The war then moves to the next region and the fighting continues, seeing who comes out on top.

Once you've played out the battles across the five regions, the round ends and the second half of the game begins. You'll do the same as the first round but with a new set of cards, offering up new heroes, abilities and more that you can use to see who claims dominion over England. The player with the most victory points over the two rounds is the winner.

An introduction to the game and more detail concerning gameplay is available for you to check out below. If you're a fan of the likes of Blood Rage by CMON or The King Is Dead by Osprey, this seems like a game in the same style.

The Last Kingdom Preview // Weekly Game Night

I am a big fan of The Last Kingdom and I think that Gamelyn has put together an interesting and tactical board game with plenty of replay value. Having each of the leaders have distinctly different abilities helps and the bonus of having a changing deck of cards each round also means you'll need to rethink your strategy from game to game.

Make sure to check out the campaign on Kickstarter right now!
