FFG Take Catan To Westeros With Brotherhood Of The Watch
July 5, 2017 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games are taking on the world of Catan with their Game Of Thrones themed version called Brotherhood Of The Watch.
Similar to traditional games of Catan you are going to be building settlements, roads, and gathering resources to build developments all in order to fund the continued defence of The Wall, keeping the Wildlings at bay and the other horrors of the icy North.
The Robber, for example, is themed after Game Of Thrones as Tormund Giantsbane. A neat twist and certainly befitting of his raiding nature.
The twist comes as you start to add these characters into the mix which allow you to change how you play from turn to turn. Each player will get access to these different powers and therefore can use them to change their strategy.
As well as that each time you play you will be trying to defend against the forces of The Wildlings coming over the wall. You will be rolling for what hexes will be giving up their resources but also how many Wildlings are storming towards the rest of Westeros.
Some cool notes also came in on victory conditions...
"Victory occurs when a player has both improved the infrastructure of the Gift and successfully kept it safe from invaders. This is shown when a player has achieved ten Victory Points by any combination of building keeps, roads, and settlements; hiring three or more guards to keep the Wall safe; and buying Development Cards to increase their prestige, all while safeguarding the Gift."
"However, if the Wildlings breach the wall three times throughout the game, an alternate victory takes place. If this occurs, the game ends immediately as the Brotherhood of the Night's Watch can no longer delay their decision. The player commanding the most guards holding their posts on the Wall gains the title of Lord Commander and wins the game."
Does this variation on the game sound good to you?
"The twist comes as you start to add these characters into the mix which allow you to change how you play from turn to turn..."

We can ALWAYS use another version of Catan! I’m sure Monopoly Catan is already on the way. How soon till they make Catan Catan, a Catan themed reskin of Catan?
To be fair on FFG this actually does look like a legitimately good tweak to the classic gameplay.
This looks like more than a reskin. I would love to learn more about the new mechanics.
I haven’t played but this sounds more like Star Trek Catan, with the characters and their powers.
Sounds like fun, I might give it a try. I’m sure this will sell well before the new season.
Who cares? FFG are living off IP’s but the games are meh.
It’s OK, you don’t have to buy/play/like it. 🙂
I like the idea, but then I like Catan and a number of FFG games too!
So I just had the worst experience buying a new game. I spent a lot of money on Game of Thrones Catan and found out that there are missing pieces and misprints int he rule book and game pieces. I contacted the company regarding it. Here is their response. Current request status: Closed Note: Thank you for contacting us with your concerns. We are aware of these misprints in the rule book and the components and we apologize for the inconvenience. We have changed this for our future printings of the game and unfortunately do not plan on have the… Read more »
