FFG Talk Skirmish Options In Star Wars: Imperial Assault’s New Expansion
August 29, 2017 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has been showcasing more of their new expansion for Star Wars: Imperial Assault, Heart Of The Empire. This time the focus is on skirmishing and what the new expansion adds to the game.
A whole bunch of new options were added into the game for you to use in your skirmish games. Whilst the Rebels got new heroes and plenty of upgrades, the Imperials also got themselves brutal new soldiers and tactics to make the most of their aggression.
The host of upgrade cards, skirmish game options and more can not only be applied to the characters from the box here but also your existing collection. Maybe characters like Chewbacca and Han Solo could benefit from some of the upgrades available in this set.
I have to admit that whilst the story mode and campaigns of Imperial Assault do appeal to be the skirmish variant is also peaking my interest, especially after the news of Star Wars: Legion. Maybe some of the skirmish gameplay here could work as a good aid around some of the larger battles that Legion hopes to recreate.
Thinking in bigger terms maybe your scenarios in Imperial Assault could play a secondary role to Legion. Your heroes could be making their way through an underground facility to take down a shield generator or secure a location whilst the troops fight it out above ground.
Do you play much of the skirmish game?

love the figures and walker.
Hopefully this puts to rest that IA is dead now that Legion is out.
This expansion was announced months ago, long before Legion.
Even if it’s dead it’s dead only as a skirmish not as adventure game.
couldn’t agree more. FFG and STAR WARS are in that enviable tabletop position of having multiple games in the one setting. impossible not to have your imagination run wild with the opportunities this creates. so few ever reach such heady heights and I don’t think anyone has ever had so many ongoing supported titles. would be nice if they made the most of it with campaign expansions. great way to get people to play some of the other titles in the setting if they don’t already. but more importantly than that, it’s the stuff of tabletop legend. all in all… Read more »
West End Games about 25-30 years had comparable amount of output to what we see from FFG now, boardgames, miniature games, space combat games, RPG, duel books (it was pre ccg).
Check out here to see just how much they did do: http://www.d6holocron.com/
fair shout. it was the card games that had me thinking that FFG might take the top spot.
This expansion for IA was already announced a while ago pre Legion reveal, seeing a new expansion would be more convincing that IA has not been dropped going forward.
I see IA more aimed at board gamers and Legion is more aimed for miniature wargamers. I dont see why they wont be doing both!
I for one will be doing both! Still on the base IA game, but want to expand out!
The crossover point is in the skirmish rather than the campaign mode. The latter shouldn’t be in competition with SWL.
Those look really good.
Wookie with a grenade launcher ftw
Looks promising… the new game options and the minis. IA is getting more and more interesting. And it is already a very good game.
And people are like, “Uhhhh…” IA is definitely a retiring game. That’s okay though, the last expansion for Descent and the app were both put out when we all knew that game was over. This game is over too, despite this old announcement still existing.
I reckon there will be a few more expansions yet. descent got 7 expansions (excluding the monster and hero packs). Imperial Assault is about to get a 5th and by all accounts is a more popular game.
Even if this is the end (and I don’t think it is) there is still enough content to last players for a while
I think this might be the end….. of 1.0. The release of the app will almost certainly mean the release of a 2nd ed.
Or with its renergizing or at least attempting to the skirmish mode could this be IA version 2.0? It seems a bit of a sore thumb in the release arc, IA covered running around bases ala Death Star and some Scum and Villany, along the way, with Tatooine in Twin Shadows reflecting A New Hope and Hoth and Bespin ofc ESB, Jabbas realm start of ROTJ. Or is HOTE reflecting the Rebel efforts of screen such as the Bothans? I had kinda assumed the new expansion would be Endor and IA scouts and speeder bikes 🙂
