What Was Revealed At Fantasy Flight Games’ In-Flight Report 2021?
September 16, 2021 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has dropped the new In-Flight Report at GenCon this year for 2021. What got revealed? Well, here is a little commentary on what we thought of some of the announcements from this year's event.
Fantasy Flight Games In-Flight Report 2021
The folks at Fantasy Flight Games have been having a tough time of late what with the shipping situation and a global pandemic. But, a lot of their core products are still going strong and they are working towards some new releases at the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022.
Arkham Horror: The Card Game
The first of the previews was for Arkham Horror: The Card Game
Machinations Through Time // Arkham Horror: The Card Game
Machinations Through Time is a time and reality hopping adventure for your investigators. This is a brand new standalone scenario that can also be played in epic multiplayer mode. This means that loads of players can work together to try and solve the riddle at the heart of Machinations Through Time.
Fantasy Flight Game also talked about the repackaging of some of their existing Arkham Horror content. Instead of being released as individual packs, things are now going to be bundled into Player and Campaign boxes. So, all of the cards from one "cycle" in one place.
The Dunwich Legacy Expansions // Arkham Horror: The Card Game
I for one am pretty happy with this idea. It means that everything comes out in one go and you can decide as an individual or group if you want to snag either or both of the boxed sets. It also really saves Fantasy Flight Games from the shipping problems in the past when trying to keep up a monthly/bi-monthly release schedule.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game
The next of the fun announcements was the news that we're getting a revised core set for The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game.
Revised Core Set // The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game
I have said that we have needed this for a few months now and it is good that Fantasy Flight Games are taking the plunge. The game is still great but this now means that four players can dive into this epic card game with one box without having to worry about picking up three of the original core sets!
As well as making it easier for new players, this core set also comes with campaign cards, boons and burdens which link the original three quests together. This falls more in line with the way that Fantasy Flight Games approached their Saga Expansions for the game.
In addition to that, the designers are also going to be re-releasing some of the most popular quests from The Lord Of The Rings' many, many cycles. These are also going to be tied together with new campaign cards which link your quests together.
The Dark Of Mirkwood // The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game
Also, The Dark Of Mirkwood is going to be re-releasing containing The Oath and The Caves of Nibin-Dûm. These quests were only available in the special edition of the game originally so it's neat to see these popping up once again.
Marvel Champions
Lastly, at least for their card games, Fantasy Flight Games also announced a new Hero Pack for Marvel Champions. Vision is drifting into the action ready to bring ruin to your foes.

PLUS, if you're a big Spider-Man fan then you'll want to check out the upcoming release for Sinister Motives. This introduces Ghost-Spider and Spider-Man (Miles Morales) into the mix as they deal with a familiar set of villains from Spider-Man's rogue's gallery.
Sinister Motives // Marvel Champions
As a big Spider-Man fan, this seems like a great new deluxe expansion to dive into. Who wouldn't want to take on Doctor Octopus, Venom, Mysterio and more? This will also herald the start of a new wave of Hero Packs which are all Web Warrior focused.
Star Wars: Outer Rim
The long-awaited Unfinished Business Expansion is also on the way from the folks at Fantasy Flight Games for Star Wars: Outer Rim.
Unfinished Business Expansion // Star Wars Outer Rim
Outer Rim is one of those games that has found a little nook within the Star Wars community. So, it's neat to see that the game is going to be expanding with the addition of some fearsome characters from the expanded Star Wars universe. Hello Dengar!
What Else?
Well, in addition to the news for their card and board games above, Fantasy Flight Games also announced that they are going to be doing a lot more for Terrinoth and Descent: Legends Of The Dark over the coming years.
They are also going to be putting together a graphic novel series that expands on the world of Twilight Imperium, the game that launched Fantasy Flight back in the day. The design team do seem like they are trying to make the most of their own properties currently.
Are you intrigued by the news from Fantasy Flight Games or were you hoping for more?

Outer Rims… somehow the game doesn’t really speak to me yet it’s Star Wars…. but do I really want to shell out 60€ for a game that doesn’t pique my interest? (and another 40’ish for the extension)
I think you mean ‘pique’ not ‘peak’…
Yes, you’re right… goes to show that only listening to English really leave a lot to be desired in terms of writing things correctly XD
It’s not you, it’s English. My language is an idiot.
No it’s the language that was designed by people like JRR TOLKIEN That’s smart enough to understand all the background of each word that’s why all the weard spellings an silent letters.?
Tolkien began piquing/peaking interest? I knew he was a wrongun!
Lol.
I think you’ll find that English predates Tolkien by several thousand years…
And I hate to be pedantic… but it’s ‘weird’ 🙂
If you want weird spelling… go read some welsh roadsigns…
i did say people like Tolkien he was more interested in old Scandwegen languages to form new languages for the likes of middle earth a live dialect is changing every day. gallic has some tough tiers as well.
No. Thankfully, unlike ye olden days when you had a crap game attached to a license, you have a good range of Star Wars games to choose from, not just FFG but Hasbro as well. I only have Star Wars Duels and Imperial Assault, and I’m fine with that!
Ah, typical. I got into Lord of the Rings card game a couple of months ago and they go and release an updated set. I doubt it will be worth buying the new set just for the new stuff. Oh well.
You’ll be able to print off the new stuff they are adding to make your own cards as a heads up @demonsub – so there is a way to get the new handful of cards these sets might release.
Oh, that’s pretty good. Thanks.
The mirkwood card game could be worth checking out closer.
I have never played card games, I always perceived them as a lazy option to the hobby. Now that my hobby time is very limited I might try the LOTR one.
There is a version of LotR LCG on the consoles if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
If you’re looking for card/boardgame hybrid, Journeys in Middle Earth board game is one of my favourites. It’s Solo/Coop and uses an app that’s works really well in my opinion. Most scenarios take an hour or less, so good for limited hobby time.
Cards used in that instead of dice rolling. Nice miniatures. I’ll be picking up the third and final box when that comes out.
Thanks for the reply and interest. So if I am not mistaken LCG means ‘living card game’ right? Is that like ‘Magic the Gathering’ were one needs to always buy more cards in a never ending cycle of wallet haemorrhage?
Also, I am just looking up ‘Journeys in Middle Earth board game’, and I remember OTT doing an article on it. It has sparked my interest and I will watch a playthrough on Youtube tonight. Thanks for the heads up.
Major difference between the LCG model and the CCG model of Magic is that there’s no blind buy involved. There will be regular releases of new content in an LCG, but what comes in each set is fully defined (I.e. you don’t have to buy lots of booster packs to track down certain rare cards etc.) It can still be a wallet damaging experience, but buy in is more of a defined quantity. As the LotR LCG is solo/co-op, there’s no competitive meta to chase either, so you can buy content at your own pace a bit more compared to… Read more »
Thanks, I was not aware of the difference.
I was about to answer, but @scribbs has done much of it for me. With LotR LCG there were the the big boxes ($30) followed up with six monthly expansions ($15 each), so you’re looking at a lot of money. The starter set itself is not a bad price and has three adventures and it might be an idea to try that first, see if it appeals… then consider expansions. There used to some ‘fan scenarios’ on Boardgamegeek if you want to print stuff for yourself. Personally I would advise you expand with Saga boxes. There are two of those… Read more »
Thanks for the explanation. At this point I am leaning towards ‘Journeys…’. I will watch some play-throughs to see what appeals the most and make a decision.
Journeys App is free to download on Steam, Android and iOS. You could take a look at that see if it’s you kind of thing. Just fake your way through a scenario and see how it plays out. The app gives you access to the scenarios provided with the boxes. The DLC allows you to reuse the box contents with a different scenario and they cost extra. Not bought those yet, but my hobby time been devoted to to other things of late, so I haven’t played through the second expansion yet and don’t need the DLC. I have got… Read more »
That sounds like a good idea actually. I’ll download the app and give it a try over the weekend. Thanks again.
Also, don’t forget the BoardGameGeek reviews! You can definitely post on the forum of either game what they feel is the difference between the two, and which they like better. AFAIK, Journey has more of a storytelling experience, since the app acts like the dungeonmaster (gamemaster), and parcels out the story. The card game focuses more on “beating the numbers on the cards” rather than a storytelling experience.
I don’t see card games as lazy, unless you paint things. 😀 Card games can have strategies deeper than a miniatures wargame.

Yeah, I got that vibe with the app and I did enjoy it. I am seriously thinking of buying in to it. As regards the ‘lazy’ comment, I did not mean it in a deprecatory way nor was I trying to offend anyone – to be clear. It was simply a perception I had, as I stated. And yes, it was because of the hobby aspect that I harbored this perception. In a way it is true that there is no hobby to card games, but as I have come to find out, it has other strengths I can take… Read more »
