Explore Arcadia in Cool Mini Or Not’s New Game
February 18, 2014 by dracs
Cool Mini Or Not have a board game to tickle our adventurer taste buds, prepare to explore an ancient city and fight a vampire lord in Arcadia Quest.
In Arcadia Quest, up to four players each have control of a guild of three heroes. They must face off against each other and the various monsters of the game as they explore the ancient city of Arcadia through a series of branching campaign scenarios.
The game looks to be building upon the fun chibi style of Soda Pop Miniatures' Super Dungeon Explore, while providing players a completely new gameplay experience. The idea of controlling a hero guild is an intriguing one, essentially giving each of the players control over an adventuring party, rather than being restricted to one member.
Do you guys like the sound of Arcadia Quest?

Very cool! I loved the SDE aesthetics despite usually liking the really realistic and well proportioned figure lines over OTT manga style minis. I’ve yet to actually play a game with my copy of SDE but it looks like great fun and I’m sure this will be too.
I’m not keen on the look of the board tiles when you compare them to the really visually striking and really awesome SDE ones but on the other hand one of the heroes is Legolas!
Do we know if this’ll be kickstarted or go straight to general release?
Meh, I really don’t understand the appeal of the whole Chibi look. Where does it even come from?
The ‘chibi’ style comes from Japan. as ‘chibi’ is a japanese verb meaning ‘small’. Its a very popular art form there, almost every big name game/anime/manga (comic) will have an extension series with characters in chibi form. Ususally these series are usually funny, cute sataire in nature and meant for lighthearted enjoyment.
Sounds and looks like a way of getting my daughter into the hobby. Would love to see the miniatures painted and up close.
Super Dungeon Explore is probably even better for that, that way she could play as part of a team and only have to worry about 1 or 2 characters rather than having 3 different characters to worry about and have to fight against every other player.
Chibi style….eh…it is a hard sell for me. I played SDE and liked it but not sure if I liked it enough to want to own the models. Some of the big monsters were pretty cool though.
I’m a little wary of CMON projects to be honest. They pump out so much stuff I’m left wondering how many of their projects will see any sort of support in the future.
CMoN don’t make many games of their own. They act as producer and distributor of games from other companies. The amount of expansion and support is not up to CMoN. The two boardgames I play that CMoN handle, Zombicide (Guillotine Games) and SDE (SPM), have both had a steady stream of releases.
Totally agree. CMON are linked to Dark Age and before that New Wave minis. Which was essentially a scam website here in the US. They had a flashy nice page with a huge amount of apparently available minis from all sorts of hard to get ranges. You’d order. Then. Nothing. They are the guys behind Heroquest, etc. as well (look at all the trouble with that one). Their business practices are dubious at best and they are just constantly churning out mediocre games to score quick cash. They certainly have a steady stream of releases though, again with the make… Read more »
Soda Pop Miniatures designed Super Dungeon Explore. They’ve been doing anime style minis since before they teamed up with CMoN and they handle all the creative side, CMoN have nothing to do with it. SDE does have its fans, our group among them, none of us are anime/chibi fans, we just really like the game. We’ve tried other dungeon crawlers and SDE is our favourite. You might find it odd, but I wouldn’t take sly digs at you for not liking it. Zombicide is Guillotine Games who are pretty much all ex-Rackham. Guess what, we really like that one too… Read more »
Im with you all the way. Yes some people can be bad at running a business and even scammers. As for Soda Pop I like the games they make so I buy. Very simple and straightforward.
Hence why I still buy from GW…
Here is an old thread about new wave on TMP: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=75885
Here is an old thread with a typical run down of what new wave was all about (and Dave the guy who owns Dark Age and New Wave and bought Tabletop Gaming News was the owner of New Wave)

I’m actually surprised that people are so tough on the chibi look. If the game is fun, the rules are solid and enjoyable, whats the problem? I find these games are the ones I look at when I try to recruit my girlfriend into gaming, fun, simple, and aesthetically pleasing. I like that you take control of a group instead of an individual. Hell, you might even be able to use your SDE figures in this game.
Totally agree. There is a ton of good boardgames with overall subpar graphical realization, and anyone bothers. But a well realized chibi look gets quite the beating.
I like it.
This game like kind of interesting and cool, when I saw the box I thought this was a SPM project. Its something I’d look into. As for the CMON hate, hmm I disagree on their stuff being expensive, what your get in their boxes is pretty high quality when compared to other stuff. I think trashing something based on history of a publisher, and using that to say I’m not even going to look at this as they are pants is so short sighted. I admit I have has some slow deliveries from CMON, and they are bogged down in… Read more »
I’m pretty sure this is a Soda Pop Minis product, Super Dungeon Explore was done by SPM with help from CMoN and as this would appear to be in the same world so I’m sure this is by SPM too. 🙂
Hmmm, actually looking on the arcadia site there doesn’t seem to be any mention of Soda Pop at all. That’s odd- it looks like the same IP…
It has a similar aesthetic but this isn’t a SPM game. Nothing to do with them as far as I can tell.
“Arcadia Quest has no relationship whatsoever with SDE. It is a brand new game by Spaghetti Western Games whose only similarity with SDE is that they both have an art style known as “chibi”.”
Yup, you’re right. 🙂

Thats for clearing this all up. Not to say I won’t support this game. but it really looks like they ripped off SPM game idea as well as its characters. They look so much like the SDE cover I took it as an expansion.
Hmm reminds me a bit of City of Thieves at first glance… Could be interesting
Emo…
The game is up on kickstarter, a great price for the amount of stuff you get, the add-ons are coming thick and fast too! 🙂

Yeah I have chosen to back this. For $100 it’s a snap I love the feel and the pve and pvp options and the look.
Ironically, next month SDE is also taking to KS.

Interestingly, this is without CMoN who have been manufacturer and distributor of all previous SDE releases. It’s tempting to see Arcadia Quest as filling the SDE void for CMoN. It’s also tempting to speculate that the experience of the RK KS has soured the relationship between the two companies, especially as SPM took over the communication side of the project from CMoN late last year and improved it immensely.
Kinda thinking the same here CMoN have, if not for my eternal faith, almost ruined RK for me.
I hope this new game will be good but it looks like their ambitions are a little more restrained this time.
