Weekender: Epic Kickstarters Go To War!
November 26, 2016 by dignity
Join us for The Weekender today where we're unveiling the winners of Hobbyween and diving into a mighty battle on Kickstarter between some titanic games.
Will you end up having to choose or are there a few hacks you could use to get in on all of them?
What Happened This Week?
Firstly we're going to be diving into what went on this week...
- Bolt Action Beach Assault Battle Report - We hit the beaches trying out our own Operation Sea Lion.
- Black Friday/Holiday Deals - See if you can dig out some deals for the Holiday season.
- Fresh Water Challenge - Join in and get creating some wonderful terrain.
If you're interested in following each of the projects we mentioned in the show you can find them here looking at the Water Tanks, Water Scatter Pieces, Bailey Bridge, and Catchment Pond.
Kickstarter Goes To War
With Kickstarter being hit by some titans this weekend we thought we'd focus in on four that have caught our eye...
- Shadows Of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress - Go adventuring in Fantastical Feudal Japan.
- Mythic Battles: Pantheon - Will you be snapping up the new Gods from Mythic Battles?
- Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 - Jump in on this nightmare world from Kingdom Death.
- The Roots Of Magic: Students Of Sorcery - Tired of swords? Let's go for just the Sorcery!
Importantly we also discuss how you might be able to get involved in ALL of these projects by pledging low to go high later down the line. It's important to check with the Kickstarter creators first, though!
Hobbyween Winners
We take a look at the winners of Hobbyween and give out some Golden Buttons as Lance takes us through them and some special mentions that we just had to show off.
It'll be fun to run this next year and see what crazy Pumpkin creations we can come up with!
News Time
Rounding things off we're delving into the news from this week...
- Time Commanders Returns - Watch along with 'Buttery Biscuit Base' Greg Wallace.
- Blood Bowl Bags From Battle Foam - Keep your teams secure in these new bags.
- Dark Age November Releases - Which of the Shadow Caste will you be picking up?
- Pegasus Knights From FireForge Games - Are you going to use these for 9th Age or Kings of War?
What caught your eye?

Happy Kickstarter Weekend …
Happy Weekend!
It’s the Weekend!!
Don’t know about you but I’m “KickStartered out” right now – so limiting mtself to just one of these games. They all look fantastic, but at $99 (or $89 in my case and Christmas around the corner) Mythic Battles:Pantheons wins hands down.
Has to be said, “Roots of Magic” also has a bit of.a Frostgrave feel to it – not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Some lovely models, and if it has a different playstyle to FG then I could easily see space for both in my collection with some model cross-overs.
I’m afraid the rule on using ‘ii’s on the end plurals is simple – if the word is derived from Latin (i.e. Roman) then they are valid, but not if Greek. Pegasus is from Greek Mythology so no… As for a collective nouns… Geese are a ‘gaggle’ on the ground but a ‘skein’ in flight. I like the suggestion below of a ‘murder’ as in crows (which are also called a ‘horde’) you get a ‘rout’ of wolves on the move (and of snails…oooh scary!) A ‘wedge’ of swans You can have a ‘harras’ of horses. Personally I’d go for… Read more »
There is also no plural of Pegasos. There is only one Pegasos, it isn’t the name of a species of winged horse.
Pegasus (Pegasos) – the original son of Poseidon and Medusa (that must have been one hell of a night) went on to sire a new breed of Ethiopian Pegasus who also had wings.
@coxjul Do you have a source for that? I am aware of Pliny the Elder who in the Natural History discusses winged horses in Aethiopia, but this is all he says about them – “pinnatos equos et cornibus armatos quos pegasos vocant” winged/feathered horses and armed with a horn who are called pegasos Note that ‘pegasos’ and not ‘pegasi’ is used, and there is no mention of Pegasos being their sire. There’s an out-of-copyright 19th century translation of the passage by Bostock & Riley which translates into English ‘pegasos’ as ‘pegasi’. It may there from which the confusion is coming.… Read more »
And/or which says Pegasos was their sire 🙂
Correct the on the Greek and Roman being different. I’m afraid my Greek is non-existant but Pegasus is not Greek it’s Latin. The Greek name is Pegasos (Minor change but it let’s us get the plural) and the Roman name is Pegasus meaning the plural would be pegai. Although most of what Beleraphon did was in Lycia in Turkey which is only just being discovered so we might find the answers somewhere plus Lycian is different to Greek and Latin so it might hold new definitions. (It also has no vowels which confused Archeologists for ages) Rember Pegasus was the… Read more »
Same here, those all look good, but MB:P is what I am going for. How does everyone that has it like the first version of Kingdom Death: Monster? Thanks!
Wow – kickstartertastic!, if enthusiasm was a money maker I’d be a serial-backer 😉
Great show guys – when’s the next Re-Roll out?
I actually won something?! Yay!
Glad the weekend is here.
Surely that’s a murder of Pegasus Knights, especially when you consider how hard they hit when charging 🙂
No hex terrain toolkit to mess around with? I’m going to assume that he didn’t make any extra templates to send out. 🙁

Yay, thanks for the mention. Yes, those were real lights, I managed to feed a wire under those mats (which I designed myself) and supply the model train lights that I found on AliExpress. Fiddly to set up though!

Anyway, it was a fun project… don’t forget you can go and print that tomb model out yourself for free!
I backed Mythic Battle after watching the demo game, good call guys.
I can’t reccomend enough going in for at least a £1 pledge on a Kickstarter you like the look of it. Even if they won’t have a pledge manager later (or require a higher buy-in to allow access to the manager – still typically lower than the main pledge levels) it A) gets you access to the backer updates and B) you are still contributing to the project and every bit can help. Also keep an eye on campaign end dates – in this example Shadows of Brimstone and Mythic Battles are both ending in the coming week, whilst Kingdom… Read more »
Great post ^ 🙂
Thanks man. And I’d add one further caveat – Whatever date the creators note as the fullfillment date, no matter how optimistic they might seem in updates & comments, take it with a grain of salt. Adam at Kingdom Death has gone with a “worst case scenario” date of 2020, based on his experience with the fulfillment for KD:M’s fist campaign. Most other campaigns, even by experienced teams, can run into problems, slippages or just plain train wrecks that can derail the whole process. The rule I try to stick to is not to expect any campaign rewards in the… Read more »
A big part of the fulfilment problem with miniature based games are the limited number of suppliers with the capability, capacity and competence. The few out there that are any good tend to have their production schedule booked way ahead; all it then takes is for a few late designs etc and a project misses its slot and has to go to the back of the queue.
When projects try and shortcut this or find less reliable suppliers (to save time and/or money) then something usually suffers ( e.g. mini quality with Mercs Recon).
The date of Dec 2020 is in his own words “the best case scenario” Which means you can be waiting much longer. You can verify what I stated on the campaign page
For the 4th and final wave of delivery
too many kickstarters! not enough wallets!
Great show guys. That Napoleonic battle is actually Waterloo! (Huzzah Warren). For reference both the Cavalry Sabre technique and Bayonet charge technique shown are totally made up and not historically accurate so take it with a grain of salt (Deadliest Warrior Style). Very excited for the show especially since the old series was very good. Warren you need to grab Justin, John and Llyod and put in to be contestants. Now I’ll give you a break from conspiracies this week but I’ll tell you a good story to do with Waterloo. I know you like the topic but have you… Read more »
I purchased meself a ca-raaaaazzy fantasy box from mantic games. Very excited and also 50% of crazy boxes get a bonus thing e.g a dragon or a rule book etc.
I love that Ben’s example of passing on knowledge in Kingdom Death is the “sharp stone up the lion’s jacksy” tactic 🙂
I too was torn between Mythic Battles (which let’s face it is now such good value it would be rude to pass on it) and Shadows of Brimstone (which I am already invested in thanks to the previous KS). Thankfully Flying Frog agreed to let backers at the Lotus Level ($25) and above increase their pledge in the pledge manager, but at an un-announced higher cost than doing so now during the KS. Hopefully it won’t be a massive difference as the most interesting unlocks are tied into the $300 Shogun pledge level and I really can’t afford that AND… Read more »
@ Ben and Warren – The CD Soundtracks from Flying From Games are just atrocious. I was playing SOB Swamps of Death with a friend and we couldn’t stop laughing with the god awful CD. In fact, my friend posted the CDS of three Flying games on Ebay for a penny and no one bother to buy them 🙂 . That right there tells you something.
After seeing the game of mythic battles here I was sold for the game. I haven’t regretted any second of backing the game. Leo is fantastic, his live shows are great and they listen to the community to adept, change and update anything that is worth it.
First off, thanks for talking about my freshwater challenge project! Really need to circle back and finish up those tanks. They were delayed after I heard the deadline was being extended. My opinion, if Warren and the crew haven’t done so yet, you guys need to sit and play shadows of Brimstone. In the past, I’ve seen you guys love of dungeon crawlers, and this game is a really unique take on dungeon crawlers. American western characters fitting classic RPG archetypes (the cleric preacher, bard-like saloon girl, the tank US marshal), exploring datemon-infested mines. Like kingdom death, it can be… Read more »
Woo shout out to me 🙂
Loved this weekender, very informative
Kingdom death monster,as beautiful as she is dangerous. I think i’m in love.
while i’m on topic the autumnal flower knight by Chris is as gorgeous as the sculpt its self
Warren I know you and Justin are in on kingdom death, but what about the rest of the lads?
It would be an act of cruelty to deny Romain those male pinups to paint.
Thanks!
i didnt know, or think your beach landing was that long. i enjoyed every minute of it.
One thing, would the vehicles arriving on beach or moving across a beach not take rolls for moving over difficult ground as in the sand (Bogging Checks). Just my put in.
It will be interesting to see if these Kickstarter fulfil on time with the level of success they are having.
great show love the terrain featured.
I am fully kickstartered out, had Zombicide black plague, (everything), 7 Sins (everything), Massive darkness (again everything) The walking Dead ( you guessed it: everything ) and Super Dungeon Explore (surprise: everything) Also just bought a new MacBook pro, thanks to black friday “only” 2900 instead of ~ 3900… (That one I actually do need to work etc, so not a “fun” purchase as my old Laptop is literally falling apart after 5 Years of intense use and travelling) Oh and I am saving up to buy a house. Oh and Bloodbowl got released today… And several 40k codizes and… Read more »
The pumpkin is from the Twisting Catacombs terrain kickstarter (which I still need to paint – I see my Xmas holiday having an airbrushing day to work on those).
