DreadBall Xtreme Sends A Crunching Tackle Kickstarters Way
February 21, 2014 by brennon
DreadBall Xtreme has finally made it's way onto Kickstarter and of course we want to make sure you guys see all the goodies on offer. So, check them out below as well as some more information from Mantic Games!
As you can see the boxed game is once again packed full of miniatures. This is what a lot of people like to see, real miniatures right off the bat showing them what they are getting. It might not be the 'start up' approach but it does show off some snazzy reasons to start pledging.
From the Kickstarter...
- No Referee = More Violence for Everyone: with no one to stop the bloodshed, anything goes! Sucker punches and stomps are the norm, and the introduction of explosive collars, deadly traps and bloodsucking aliens only increase the level of violence.
- Customize your Battlefield: games are organized in prisons and warehouses at a moment’s notice, using industrial scenery to shake things up - everywhere from the scoring zone to the ball launch location can change!
- Play as Enigmatic Sponsors: the powerful organizers behind the game, Sponsors dictate your play-style and are experts in intimidation, blackmail and illegal gambling. Best of all, Sponsors allow you to build entirely unique teams out of any player combination you like!
These Convicts and Asterians are looking utterly epic and I think two of the best teams that Mantic has put out for DreadBall, well, discounting the Forge Fathers of course (Dwarven bias 101).
I love the idea of playing as these sponsors as well, adding another level of flavour to the game and making it feel more narrative as a whole. It's neat to see these varying versions of DreadBall out there and twined with the environment packs you have so many ways to play the game now.
As I've been writing this the game has already been funded 50% (it might have gone up more by the time I finish) so I suggest diving in and keeping an eye on things to see what the stretch goals are going to be!
Will you be sponsoring?

Jumped straight in on this one. Can’t wait!
Funded in a bit of 30min (for $100k as well!)… loving the new aesthetic 🙂
My first kickstarter pledge ! ^_^
Mine too! Love me some Dreadball, though, so had to when I saw the video from Mantic this morning. Went in at Rampage level
I missed out on the last one, I managed to get in early and grab an early bird Rampage package. I’m excited!
Dreadball is a great game; this takes it into another dimension, and expands the possibilities. It is also a useful insight into how Deadzone and Warpath forces may grow as it introduces more variety and species into the mix.
hmmm
Preassembled FFG style plastic, I feel they should get the chance and so this for the original Dreadball too.
Must say I am tempted by those blue girls
Damn you Beasts of War. I’d promised myself no more Kickstarters until the Summer :-p
I’ve heard a lot about this game, but I just haven’t been very interested in it. Maybe that’s because I really did not enjoy the Blood Bowl video game. If it’s true you can use the models in Deadzone, then I might have to consider it.
It’s VERY different than Blood Bowl. Check out the BoW Dreadball Academy videos, they may change your mind
As fine a game as DB, it just hasn’t found its way onto my gaming table anywhere near enough to make it worthwhile backing this. Still tempted though, looking very good.
“It might not be the ‘start up’ approach”
Is this a reference to what Kickstarter is ‘supposed’ to be for?
Yep. While I can see the merits of companies doing these KS to bring their games to market it does somewhat go beyond what I imagined KS used to be about. Saying that, maybe the whole concept has just evolved past that.
On the bright side though I guess we’re getting a grand game out of this and they are probably going to use the stretch goals to make sure they can continue to support the game away from the base package.
BoW Ben.
That’s a bit of a misnomer that KS themselves have tried a few times to put right. What their site is for is any* creative project at any stage of the creative process. It doesn’t matter if it’s a start-up getting funds together to get a project off the ground, or an established company with a finished product in pre-production looking for funds to produce and distribute (which is what DBX is). KS is for both.
*there are some restrictions on exactly what product you can offer
Then I stand corrected happily so 🙂
Darn you for doing more amazing minis. And making GW products even less attractive than they already were.
I am a huge Mantic Fan and I just picked up the Deadzone starter set, extra scenery set and crates. I have not gotten into this game and I will probably wait to see what the Kings of War II KS looks like.
I’m in, the mini’s look sweet and I like mantic alot.
Thanx for the heads up Brennon, 🙂
kickstarter doesn’t use paypal or maestro……………………………huh………………..
Amazon handle the payments for KS. If Amazon don’t take it, KS don’t take it. Some companies have allowed people to pledge via paypal directly with them, though I’m not sure if Mantic are one of them.
They are one of those companies. 🙂
It was Paypal pledges that funded Enforcer Peacekeepers in the Deadzone Kickstarter, even though the Kickstarter total wasn’t enough to unlock them, there was another $10k of Paypal donations “off the system”.
Probably just message them via Kickstarter to confirm and find out how it’s done.
Couldn’t resist it. I’m now a kickstarter backer for Dreadball Extreme, this game is going to be priceless!!!
If you like Dreadball, you should give Slaughterball a look as well. The project is looking for funding on Kickstarter right now and while it is kind of the underdog here, the amount of stuff you get for a mere 90$ is astonishing (52 finely sculted athletes, stretch goals not even included) and the rules are great and available on the kickstarter page.
So will Dreadball Xtreme be compatible with regular Dreadball? I’m not sure if I’m going to pledge. I really like the styling of all the figures and the introduction of these new alien races. I guess I look at this and see at as a precursor to what another Warpath kickstarter could be or an expansion of Deadzone.
