Days Of Wonder Are Rolling On The River

Days of Wonder have a new board game on the way, letting you create new settlements on the banks of The River.
The River is a new game by designers Sébastien Pauchon and Ismaël Perrin. It's a tile-based worker-placement game, where players compete to exploit the resources of the river lands and ensure their settlement is the best this new world has seen.
In The River, players struggle to make the most amazing settlement of this new world. In order to outmatch your opponents, construct valuable buildings and cultivate your river banks into harmonious and productive tracts. Reserve resources, enlarge your territory, and block your competitors… Every decision counts in this fast and streamlined tile-placement game. But be careful, some of your pioneers will decide to settle along the way and the lack of a workforce could cost you the victory.
The River seems to capture that pioneer spirit that has been so romanticised over the years, letting you send out your settlers to find new territory and lay the groundwork of what could one day be a prosperous town.
It could potentially be a good teaching tool for exploring environmental issues and resource management. After all, you can't take more resources than are available on an island.
The game is due to be released at Essen this October, before heading to general release in North America and Europe in November. The rules are currently available to download so you can look it over and see what you think.
Is this a game you would like to try?
"Ensure your settlement is the best this new world has seen."
