Watch Out For Darkest Dungeon On Kickstarter October 20th
October 8, 2020 by brennon
Mythic Games has been showing off all manner of awesome previews for their upcoming Kickstarter for Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game. Based on Red Hook Studios' video game, this is a pretty awesome take on this terror-filled dungeon delver.
Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game Kickstarter (Get Notified Of Launch)
The game sees one-to-four players taking on crazed madmen, shuffling undead and of course some terrifying bosses in a board game which is as much about exploration and resource management as it is brutal combat.
The Jester // Darkest Dungeon
As a cooperative experience, the players will take on the role of well-known characters from the video game (like the Jester above) and head down into dungeons in search of loot, enemies to vanquish and gold which they can spend to rebuild the town and help it stand against the darkness all around it. If you liked the dark and moody themes of the video game then the board game continues to emulate that.
Whilst the video game had you playing as a more omnipotent figure who controlled the fates of the group at large, the board game instead switches the perspective and has you tackling dungeons as the heroes. Even with this change of viewpoint the game continues to very much "feel" like Darkest Dungeon and it was certainly the best kind of harrowing when we got to give it a try this week.
One thing you will have also noticed is that these miniatures are looking like fantastic representations of the artwork from the digital game, especially with the stunning work by Seb Lavigne!
The Plague Doctor // Darkest Dungeon
Whilst there will be a core collection of characters in the box for you to play around this is also a Mythic Games Kickstarter so expect there to be a lot of additional expansions which are going to be thrown into the mix, all drawn from the rich lore and artwork for Darkest Dungeon.
Characters & Foes // Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game currently feels very good to play and you'll hopefully see that for yourself very soon! We only got to spend around two hours with the game earlier in the week but it was very easy to slip into the mechanics of the game and find yourself planning out what to do next. One thing I really liked (which reminded me of the video game) was the way that the game is always nudging you to push your luck. You really get the sense that events are on a knife-edge and things could turn on you in an instant...perfect!
There is a lot more to the intricacies of Darkest Dungeon but we'll be coming back to that in the next few weeks ahead of the Kickstarter on October 20th. Make sure to keep an eye out for more soon.
Are you tempted by this from what you've seen so far?

Looks lovely ( as does all that comes out of Mythic ),but my wallet is on a promise to Monoliths MB:Ragnarok,so sadly ( or happily depending on the wallets point of view ) i’ll have to pass.
Didn’t Ragnarokget pushed into next year to make room for this??
I assume The Jester has disadvantage on Stealth checks 🙂
Are you saying he’s a ringer?
It’s a bit ironic that a board game adaptation of a video games needs to be displayed in tabletop simulator. XD That said: the minis look lovely. I wonder if there will be a pledge “minis only”
Those look nice and have plenty of character.
They look fantastic love the plague doctor.
The 20th? That’s earlier than expected given their penchant for really short campaigns.
