Create Colourful Memories In Farben
October 2, 2018 by cassn
Remember life in glorious colour in this fun new storytelling memory game from Edition Spielweise.
In phase one of Farben, a player draws a word from the deck. All players then assign one of 12 colour cards to that word and recount a story which links the two. For example, if the word 'school' is played:
- Player 1 plays purple: "I dyed my hair purple, purchased leather gear for several hundred dollars, and wore make-up in my very short Goth-phase. I quickly realized that I didn't fit in the scene as I am a rather happy person and have a hard time not constantly smiling."
- Player 2 plays red: 'My high school time was stressful because I wasn't a good student. I worried before each exam how I was going to explain all the mistakes marked with red to my parents."
They then place that colour under the word on the table, and a new word is drawn. At the end of ten rounds, the next phase begins. In phase two, players score points by remembering which colours are assigned to each word. The winner is the player who remembers the most assigned colour cards.
Farben is essentially a simple memory game with a storytelling element, however, I find the opportunity for narrative creativity really interesting here. Players can get to know each other better by recounting memories or explore their creative side by trying to make up short stories instead.
If you're a creative thinker, I would recommend this game. The only limit on Farben's replayability is the limit of your imagination.
This game is part of Edition Spielwiese's series of small box games which aim to promote first-time game designers and artists. Others include Memoarrr and Nimble. Farben will be demonstrating at Essen later this month.
Let's play in the comments! What colour memory do you associate with the word "journey"?
"The only limit on Farben's replayability is the limit of your imagination!"
