Fantasy Flight Games Snaps Up Legend Of The Five Rings
September 13, 2015 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games have snapped up the Legend Of The Five Rings from Alederac Entertainment (AEG) and will now be looking ahead to create a Living Card Game and potentially a new Role-Playing Game using the property...
Despite only a few months ago getting a revamp and a sudden surge of support from AEG the game is now going to be passing over into the hands of Fantasy Flight. The games current cycle will be finished before hand but if you want to continue playing Legend of the Five Rings in a few years time then you'll be switching to their LCG format.
The idea currently is for the game to launch refreshed and renewed in 2017. This gives Fantasy Flight plenty of time to get stuck into making the LCG format for the game different enough from their existing range to warrant it being a new addition to your collection.
While I do understand the draw of CCGs I do think that the LCG design model from Fantasy Flight is one of the best and probably has me buying more card packs than less simply because I know that I NEED that next pack. I have spent a small fortune on Netrunner!
Did you play the current iteration of Legend of the Five Rings from AEG? If so, let us know what you think of the change.

It seems as if this deal has come together very quickly so beyond the immediate end to the CCG following the imminent release of the next set, and the revamp to an LCG for launch at GenCon 2017, nothing else has been determined at this point. It’s unclear whether it’ll keep the interactive storyline, whether it will reboot the storyline or pick up where it left off, and how closely it’ll stick to the current game mechanics. If the game was no longer viable for AEG, and it seems it wasn’t, then FFG acquiring it can only be a good… Read more »
Yeah, I have quite a few friends who love L5R, and thought that the showing at Gencon from AEG was pretty good.
They even took part in altering the storyline some (there were dinners for the top ranking players of each clan, and they voted on what their clan ought to do in the upcoming events).
I think that L5R would lose something central if they lost the player participation in their storyline.
This could suck me back in for the first time in 15 years.
The RPG could suck me back into role playing… I haven’t done much in the last 4-5 years.. The last RPG I played was D&D 4th edition back in early 2011.
There currently is an rpg. It’s unclear at the moment whether FFG will continue it but if you’re interested in trying it then it’s out there already 🙂
According to their own reveal; “In addition to the new incarnation of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG as a LCG, we are excited to explore new possiblities for Legend of the Five Rings in the roleplaying space. At the current time, we don’t have many details about this, but we will reveal more as the details become clear.”
Knowing FFG, there’s a pretty good chance of a RPG in the near future, but that might depend on how the LCG does. Given how well Netrunner and Conquest is doing, I think FFG can pull it off
“excited to explore the possibilities” is a fancy way of saying that no thought has been given yet on what to do with the rpg. Given that that FFG are probably the #3 rpg company in the US then there’s a decent chance we could see a 5th ed, but they didn’t buy the IP because they wanted to do rpgs with it. It’ll be interesting to see whether they keep the 4th ed books in print over the next couple of years.
Um, really? They said they were going to “explore new possibilities for Legend of the Rive Rings in the roleplaying space.” Really.
I mean, the L5R RPG has been a thing for a long time. There were loads of events at Gencon (the outcomes of the adventures were tracked, and would influence the story).
I hope they are aware that there is already a game, you know?
They do, they’re just non-committal on whether they’ll be continuing with it.
L5r is my favourite card game i just could not keep up with the collection, and the roleplaying game is amazing
Just keep the game play as is but take the story back to the 4 winds storyline.
If I were FFG I wouldn’t want to saddle all the new players I hope the launch attracts with a bunch of backstory to learn. So I’d reboot completely and either do a new version of Clan War or something else entirely. Of the two, I think I’d go with a new Clan War. It’s fondly remembered by existing players, easy to pick for new players, and the best story L5R can tell because that’s the story L5R was designed to tell.
FFG have said there will be significant design changes and the LCG will have a new mechanical design, but they have said they want to keep the spirit of the game and it’s themes of honour, magic, intrigue and warfare intact. FFG state the new game will be mechanically distinct from the CCG and cards from the CCG will not be compatible.
My hope would be an L5R Descent style game. I do remember FFG put out an L5R diskwars game years ago too. The could come back too.
In the dark grim future there is only FFG and no honour.
