Cephalofair Tease Frosthaven Coming To Kickstarter In 2020
December 5, 2019 by brennon
Not content with having created one of the biggest board games of all time (in the figurative and literal sense), Issac Childres of Cephalofair Games has also announced that there is a new expansion/big box for Gloomhaven coming out via Kickstarter next year, Frosthaven.
Whilst there are two smaller expansions to Gloomhaven already known, this next step in the story will be to the same level of complexity and grandeur of the original game. There will be sixteen new characters, over twenty-five new enemies and 100 plus items and scenarios for you to uncover.
According to Childres, Frosthaven will be heading up to the far north to a small outpost above the capital city of White Oak. A group of mercenaries are looking to try and bring the settlement back from the brink of destruction, tackling the harsh elements but also more dangerous threats that exist out there in the snow.
One of the enemies they will be facing is the Algox which you can see in the cover art. There are also Lurkers who are drifting in from the icy seas and machines that wander around the frozen wastes of their own free will. You must do what you can to try and fight back your foes or perhaps even try and reason with some of the oddities you'll be facing.
We also got a little bit more of a peek at the game which will be shown off in more detail this weekend in PAX Unplugged.
Here you can see six of the new characters you'll be playing as in the game, most likely available as the core characters you get to pick from at the beginning of a Frosthaven campaign. I am really fascinated to see what Childres has in the works for Frosthaven as it is truly one of my favourite games of all time.
Jaws Of The Lion
As well as the announcement for Frosthaven we also now know the title of the smaller expansion and easier entry point coming out next year, Jaws Of The Lion.
In this game, you'll be playing as a mercenary company based out of the Sleeping Lion Tavern and your exploits will have you wandering around the streets of Gloomhaven and perhaps down into its depths as well.
The idea for Jaws Of The Lion is that it will be a mass-market product which will be available to everyone at a cut down price point and give folks an easier path into the excellent world of Gloomhaven on the tabletop.
What do you make of the news?

I don’t think I can handle a Gloomhaven 2.0. It was a painful 14months to play through the first version. Getting people together to play and then the setup and tear down time and saving state and then remembering rules when we didn’t play for a month — It was too painful. My group is older and with kids, time is expensive so i do not believe it is for me and my group and I did not find the solo experience very good. If you have a good dedicated group or fewer responsibilities maybe that will work. I believe… Read more »
That’s my hesitation too. I run two RPG groups so I know how hard it is to tie people down consistently week after week. I have Sea Fall on my shelf for over a year and I don’t know when I’ll get it started as keeping people together for Legacy games is a lot of work. And like you said, a couple of missed sessions requires a rules reboot.
I can understand that for sure. I’ve got a group of four that I play with and we get together maybe once a month for a full day of Gloomhaven – only still get three or four scenarios done though heh. We’ve done pretty well though.
I couldn’t particularly see us picking up Frosthaven as a big box expansion but I’m tempted by Jaws Of The Lion and the smaller expansion they did, Forgotten Circles to begin with. There’s so much stuff in Gloomhaven anyway that it doesn’t matter waiting a little to ‘maybe’ pick up this new version.
I’ve been playing in two different Gloomhaven groups, and they’ve gone very differently.
One group meets occasionally. We are supposed to meet twice a month, but really we meet whenever other stuff doesn’t get in the way. For this group, Gloomhaven is too long. The lion looks like a much better fit for that group.
But my other group meets very regularly and craves these kinds of long campaign games. We’ve played the absolute hell out of Kingdom Death, and we’re currently alternating between Gloomhaven and Middara (we’ve gotten very far in both).
Gloomhaven actually works great for groups who don’t have time to commit to RPG’s. The scenarios scale to party size, so, if a player can’t make it, the rest of the party can still play the scenario. I set up the scenario ahead of time to make actual setup less onerous, especially since I’ve proxied miniatures for the game (finally a use for my Massive Darkness miniatures (: I know some players who have played GH at least two times, and this next juggernaut is for them. We’re into the current GH campaign, but I picked up Forgotten Circles on… Read more »
I never played the first game but sounds interesting.
New players should start with Jaws of a Lion. Less content, but should be more affordable. Jaws is also playable by experienced players, after the first two (?) learning scenarios.
Thanks I’ll see if I can this do down the line.
