Cephalofair Games Announce Gloomhaven: Second Edition
June 13, 2023 by brennon
Cephalofair Games recently announced that their hit board game, Gloomhaven, is getting a Second Edition. Coming to BackerKit on 20th June, this is going to be another chance to dive into the world that Issac Childres has crafted.
Gloomhaven: Second Edition // Cephalofair Games
At its core, the Second Edition is Gloomhaven is going to be pretty much the same. The world, storyline and gameplay will be as you remember but a bunch of additional content is getting added into the mix. Rebalanced and redesigned classes are on the way alongside updated items and scenarios which have been reworked from the initial release. You'll also get new narrative events, updated miniatures and a faction-based reputation system.
This new edition of Gloomhaven has been designed following lessons learned from Jaws Of The Lion and Frosthaven (which hasn't really had time to breathe yet!) and has been designed as a potential next step for those who played and enjoyed Jaws Of The Lion.

New art makes an appearance as well meaning that Gloomhaven is going to look better than it ever was before. Paola Andreatta, Francesca Baerald, Phan Tuấn Đạt, Sarah Dahlinger, Mates Laurentiu, Chris Lewis, and others have all done a superb job it seems on bringing this new version of Gloomhaven to life.
Additionally, the previously teased Gloomhaven: The Role Playing Game is also coming later this year and this Second Edition of Gloomhaven is going to be handy when looking to tie both the board game and roleplaying experience together.
There is currently a BackerKit Launch Party set up for Gloomhaven: Second Edition so if you're eager, make sure to check it out. Currently, I'm unconvinced we need this right now. I could see a Second Edition coming out later down the line but people are still playing Frosthaven. Some even haven't had a chance to crack it open.
As someone who has played through all of the original Gloomhaven, I'm feeling no particular draw to this. I enjoyed the story and the experience but I've moved on now. I'm enjoying Frosthaven and can't wait to sink my teeth into that.
Could you be tempted by Gloomhaven: Second Edition?

The miniature preview was a great step backward from last year’s preview. r/gloomhaven has some additional information. GH 2.0 is a dramatically different game, although newbies will still want to pick up Jaws first. Our group quit GH 1.0 because of the pandemic, and I’ve been proxying the miniatures. Minions are the easiest. I’m going to wait until the launch and see the prices. Will probably not back since I also have Jaws and Circles unplayed.

Yer I would always recommend just picking up Jaws before diving into the larger ‘Haven collection. I have no interesting in the miniatures they’re working on. Much prefer the standees for playing my games.
I picked up Jaws of the Lion over a year ago and only tried the opening as a solo to figure out the rules.
Honestly I was a bit disappointed. Thought there would me more too it than just a skirmish game given the fanatical following of Gloomhaven.
And @brennon… do you prefer the standees because there is no painting?
Personally, I’m attracted to the hand management / spatial puzzle stuff, as well as the CYOA aspects. I think it thus appeals more to *some* hybrid players, and there’s no light Eurogame that is also a dungeoncrawler. Most other dungeoncrawlers are throwing dice, so the card aspect stands out. Most other Euros are more abstract math than I’d like. Plus, I like “unlocking” stuffs. 😛 Good to see you knew the game wasn’t to your liking with Jaws, rather than GH itself. I had to play GH before deciding to buy it, when Jaws wasn’t out yet. The miniatures are… Read more »
