Fancy Building New Car Wars Arenas With Steve Jackson Games?
April 1, 2015 by brennon
Steve Jackson Games have put together a Kickstarter campaign for Cars Wars Arena which allows you to bring the old Car Wars Classic back to the tabletop with new maps to help those old pros stop having to draw everything by hand...
They talk about keeping it simple in their opening video for the campaign and it certainly is that. No plastic pieces, no fancy vinyl mats, just simple paper and pens. It's a bit lacklustre in my opinion but then again maybe the Car Wars enthusiasts out there like this old school philosophy.
As well as looking to bring back the supplements above some of the stretch goals include adding more maps, more counters, custom dice and a few other extras to the pot of goodies but I still think this is a massive missed opportunity.
The car designs, track layouts and overall old school feel of the game could have been so much more. I know they want to 'keep it simple' but imagine if this had had some nice plastic cars, good mats and a real modern touch-up for the tabletop.
You'll have to let me know if I'm wrong here but this just seems a little bland to me.

Anyone else see where DZC Resistance figures would be amazing on the Car Wars boards? Colour me stoked!
it looks great but the postage costs more than the game!
I keep hoping SJG will pull an Ogre like rebuild of Car Wars. About time to give up that hope….
Ah, CAR WARS! I actually still have this game from the 1980s, complete with the “Midville” modular game mat where you can pretty much lay out a small American post-apocalypse town room-by-room and street by street in true “graph paper” style. I even have one of my old cars from 25 years ago (note the dot matrix printer cut-out at the bottom).

It’s great to see this game making a comeback. Now if I can just find someone to play it with . . .
Car Wars is a great game but I have to agree that Steve Jackson (or Gary Jackson or whoever) is missing an opportunity here. Simple design and back to basics play doesn’t require a lack of artistic style and presentation. This suggests that SJG is stuck in the 80s, not revamping it.
I can’t disagree with that. I mean, I was crowing about breaking out my 25-year old Car Wars game . . . not shelling out money for a new one. If you want more money from me, you might need to provide something more than I bought 25 years ago?? @brennon is right, plastic cars would have been a great addition. It wouldn’t have been hard, we can buy “pre-paint” Matchbox and Hotwheels cars for 59 cents +tax here at a Target store in the US. But should we really have to figure out how to change the scale, adjust… Read more »
I would love to see them expand on the concept : Car model minitraures, modular weaponry, 3D scenery, simply a sweet tabletop…
But like this…. too 70s for my taste.

Road Rage is my current go to for Vehicle Combat. The rules are set up for convention one shots. But the game is fast and uses matchbox cars.
No, this is exactly what it should be… This is Car Wars!!! (throws editor down deep well)
And they should be able to deliver this KS on time 🙂
I first played Car Wars thirty years ago, but forgot how cool it was until I found it on Scribt by accident. Might need a play! I also found an awesome road-wars game on some pdf download site. Only cost $3 and there was everything you needed – quite detailed. Anyone remember ‘Battlecars’? No jokes. D.x
