The great river Key Flow holds the life of the Key Lands in its waters. Key Flow is a 2-6 player area expansion card game where players are in competition to build the most productive village by the river's edge. Each player starts with a 'home' card and then expands their village through drafting and playing cards over four 'seasons'.

Each season is represented by a deck of cards.  Players in a 3-6 person game are dealt six starting 'spring' cards for their opening hand, and five special 'winter' cards which they examine and place face down in front of them to be played in the final season (rules vary for a two-person game)

These cards allow the player an opportunity to work towards end goal objectives within their winter hand. Villages can only expand through the movement and generation of resources, which a number of cards can provide.

There are two main types of cards; Village cards, consisting of rivers, which provide resources, and roads, which provide movement, and Keeple cards, which activate cards to generate resources or actions. Resources include gold, iron, stone, wood, skill tiles keyple tokens, transportation, and building upgrades.

On their turn, each player drafts a card from their hand before playing it and passing on the deck.  At the end of the season (when all cards have been drafted), players move on to the next season.  As the game develops, so do upgrade opportunities.  For example, in the autumn deck, players can draft storage buildings and boats - both of which provide unique abilities.

Scoring is completed at the end of winter, and points are scored from resources collected and village developments.  Key Flow is based on the highly successful Keyflower, a research and development game which remains in the top 50 BoardGameGeek Games six years after it's publication.

Key Flow has already exceeded its target goal on Kickstarter, and I can see this card drafting game being massively popular among fans of the genre.  It will also be previewing at Essen, but you can join in and back the project here.
