Delve Deeper With Blackstone Fortress: Escalation Soon
August 19, 2019 by brennon
Games Workshop is getting those who are still exploring Warhammer 40,000's Blackstone Fortress ready for more with the Escalation expansion coming up for pre-order this weekend.

The new set adds a whole new story arch to the game where your efforts could change the fate of the galaxy. You could find yourself playing as one of four new heroes, a Rogue Trader, Crusader, Primaris Psyker and Technoarchaeologist, plus X-101 who could be one of your Servitor Retinue.
You will be heading out into the darkness of the Blackstone Fortress to try and destroy a series of linked Black Shrines which are looking to do something terrifying indeed. Protecting these shrines are a new band of Chaos Cultists led by the Firebrand.
As with previous sets for Blackstone Fortress, this expansion can be used separately in order to play out just these adventures, or you can mix them in alongside everything else from the game and use these enemies as random encounters.
Games Workshop really is pulling out all the stops when it comes to supporting Blackstone Fortress and I somewhat wish the same could have been said for the Age Of Sigmar version of Warhammer Quest! I do like what they've been doing here, building on the lore and exploring all sorts of new model designs, but I do prefer my Fantasy to my Sci-Fi!
If you're someone who is still playing Blackstone Fortress I'd love to hear what you think of the game and the adventures you've had with it.
Let me know in the comments below...

That’s a good looking set ?
It is. I can’t wait to see what 28 Mag do with this.
why does everything be made as pre-order…. I get pre-orders with physical, limited run items but something that is either digital or a regular release shouldn’t need pre-ordering. This feeling of artificial scarcity is what really keeps me off most games. :S
I don’t get the problem sorry? The idea is that you pre-order stuff so that it arrives on release day. I don’t think there’s a sense of artificial scarcity about this, plus it gets people excited for the release.
It’s because most not “main line” products from GW (read: anything but 40k and AoS) seems to have a really short shelf life. More often than not I get the impression “if I don’t buy now, I won’t get it anymore”. Especially with Blood Bowl I had this feeling in the past. Just look at some Team Dice that where sold on ebay for ridiculous amounts of money. But it’s not only GW who does this. It’s more a general dislike of the pre-order culture. You’re giving away your money before getting anything back. I am guilty of this as… Read more »
Well, if it helps, Games Workshop has seemingly kept everything released for Blackstone Fortress in print – https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/searchResults?N=3281529261+111973503
You’re right on the money that it works on your FOMO, but it makes sense for their “specialist” lines, it keeps the stock moving briskly.
It’s just a pre-order, it’s not limited release or limited edition as far as I can tell. This is literally nothing more serious than reserving a copy so you can have it on release day
I beg to differ. If I reserve a copy of anything at my FLGS I don’t need to pay up front. I pay when I collect. When I pre-order I have to hand over money now. It may be a small difference but I think it’s rather important one. At least to me.
If I preorder from mine (Element Games), regardless of whether its a GW product or not, I have to pay up front. I know Wayland Games operate a similar policy l.
Still not sure what the issue is. I could understand if you didn’t pre-order there is a good chance you’re not going to be able to get the product. As has been pointed out, you can always buy it after it is released. I’m all for pre-order because it tells me what I can pre-order (and if I pay up front, get a discount) from my FLGS. One thing I hate about pre-ordering and not knowing when it is going to actually release and tying up my money way in advance. For example, I will pre-order Aeronautica Imperialis, but do… Read more »
The heroes look amazing, though I’d love it if GW went a bit more “out there” on the bad guys. I haven’t picked up blackstone fortress mainly because I’m a bit over chaos marines / cultists etc. I have plenty already!
Are these all new figures? They look familar, I’m sure I have seen them before, did GW preview them a while ago? The Sanctioned Psyker is a lovely nod and update to the old models from the 90s and the Crusader is spot on!
They have been previewed before yes.
As well as being previewed here before, the heroes were all part of a boxed game called ‘Combat Arena’ revealed in February at the New York Toy Fair. I think that was US release only though, so great opportunity for the rest of us to get our hands on some characterful sculpts!
All of those look really good and some of those even look gorgeous.
Ooh! I like the look of this, and the updated Chaos cultists really look nice! Seeing the good sculpt on X-101 makes me wish we could get more updated servitors for the Astartes/Ad-Mech forces.
Yeah, with you there on the servitors.
I completely get the fantasy vs sci fi preference where dungeon crawlers like Blackstone are concerned. That said, it is a really great game and I’m excited to see new material coming out in support of it. Some of the new models look fantastic.
definitely an interesting bunch to work with a few sisters and would make a good black ship crew posable?
Just started painting the core set so it’s great to see more content on the way!
Guess they forgot about Warhammer Quest..
Really don’t like the “Sword-leg” woman but other than that, really love the look of this box, another hole in my wallet!
Cultists look sick. I don’t like the Technoarchaeologists leg but the rest is a set of solid minis.
I know we all tend to take it as a given whenever GW roll out a new product that the presentation quality will be high, but I just wanted to call out the quality on those paint jobs. They are exceptionally well executed.
I think I’m begrudgingly going to get this, it’s $20 off what I paid for the base game and hardly worth it at $215 NZD – but I like the game and would like to see the line through. GW however have successfully turned me off the hobby and am not looking at investing in anything further after Blackstone Fortress, I’ve already stopped buying into Kill Team and skipped Warcry after the $330 RRP. There’s just a huge level of disrespect in their regional pricing that has left quite a bad taste and dampened my enthusiasm for the hobby in… Read more »
