Asmodee Being Sold To Video Game Publisher Embracer Group
December 16, 2021 by fcostin
Over the last few years - one thing is for certain: our industry is getting bigger! We’ve been hearing about tabletop giants, Asmodee acquiring new publishers left right and centre. However, our giant has just been consumed by a titan in the Video Gaming sector.
The Embracer Group // Recently Acquired Asmodee
The Embracer Group are incredibly influential in the video games industry, with studios in their bank such as THQ Nordic, Gearbox Entertainment, Coffee Stain and many more.
Does this mean we are going to expect more IP crossovers from the video game industry to the tabletop? Or vice versa? THQ Nordic has quite the plethora of successful titles behind it, including Darksiders and Destroy All Humans. Let alone the other publishers that the Embracer Group has in their wealth, such as the Borderlands franchise, Duke Nukem and Brothers in Arms. It is safe to say they own over 500+ IPs across PC, Console and Mobile Gaming.
Although there have been promises that the management of the two will stay the same, and there will be no re-organisation or structure, it does open the door for some cross-pollination between the two platforms.
We here at OnTableTop have given our views on Video Games titles extending over to the tabletop, and given the new collaboration between the two industries, this acquisition is something we are likely to see more of in the future.
Using Qui-Gon Jinn’s wise words - “There’s Always A Bigger Fish”.

Let’s hope for the best… prepare for the worst…
The last two times Asmodee was acquired it was by French private equity firms (Eurazeo in 2013, PAI Partners in 2018) so I’m not convinced this Swedish videogame holding company is Asmodee’s final destination. Just another temporary landing spot for rich folks to make a few more bucks before passing it on to some other rich folks, and then maybe finally to Hasbro someday.
I am more positive than the last 2 times, simply because this time it is a games company and not a private equity firm. So it might be a long-term investment and not a “we buy…pretty up…and sell for more” type of investment. Let´s hope for the best 🙂
ooh so that’s why THQ are not making good games any more.
No the THQ you’re thinking went belly up because they spend waaaaay too much money on PR props for their games… THQ Nordic is just THQ by name… barely anyone from the old team still at work there IIRC
Ooh shame I’ve got a few game’s I still play like firewarrior.
Space Marine was one of the last THQ games… where they made full size power swords props to send to outlets…
Yes I’ve got that on the PC still to take some stress out on the green skin’s, I wonder if warzan is looking for one of the powersword’s ?
