Ares Joins Forces With ePawn & Bring Wings Of Glory Into The Digital Age
July 6, 2015 by stvitusdancern
Ares Games has announced that they will join forces with a startup company out of France called ePawn. This joint effort will result in a product called ePawn Arena and Wings of Glory will be one of the first games available.
ePawn Arena is a digital device that can track miniatures on its surface and relay that information to an application whether it is on a smartphone, tablet or PC. The application itself will have the interface and all the movements and other items to be tracked.
According to the announcement the ePawn Arena will allow you to play many different systems, almost like a gaming console does. You place the miniatures on the board and interact with the application. It is an interesting idea almost along the lines of Golem Arcana but with the flexibility of changing games if you want some variety. This project is supposed to go live on Kickstarter on July 7.
I know many of you are all against have technology intermixed with their wargames, but I have a feeling that this is the wave of the future and before you now it you will be playing holographic miniatures on a battlefield with real movement and action.
Are you ready for the digital age?

Very interested in this.
Still have my doubts. Can´t see a good reason to use something like this. If you play a game with some people “live”…there is no need for it. I actually don´t like the…”now you can´t forget this and that because of the device” thing…the book keeping and making mistakes and forgeting/remembering things is a big part of gameing!!! It´s a skill to do the right thing at the right time…and not to forget this and that!! And if you use it for long distance play…just do it entirely on the computer. So no point imho.
While I would not use this, I still don’t own a mobile phone and would love to throw my landline in the bin, I see this as a good thing. More exposure for games means more players and more money which equals more funding for development. The appeal of gaming on the go is undeniable, and while not my cup of tea, can mean great things for gaming in general. Thanks for the story, oh, love Wings of Glory, very fun game.
interesting.
@stvitusdancern Here you have the video of WoG using the ePawn Arena system : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BTA6Bv9SCc
I really feel like this company doesn’t know how to sell their product… the video is really boring and only at the end i see something actually happening… if i were a WoG veteran maybe but since i don’t know anything about i look at it and say… ok.
We tried the X-Com game – where the enemy is powered by your iplod or whatever. Total rubbish.
The previous (raw) video was not supposed to be public. Here is the one with explanatory text:

Sorry for the convenience
Excellent. I’ll be keeping an eye on the KS and hope to develop something for it 😉
This looks very Kewl and has real potential to be a revolutionary product. It will be like any cool hardware device and rely on support and interest from developers though. Not to mention the technical talent to pull this off. Thnx for heads up on this definately see myself taking a gamble on such a neat idea and giving them my support.
