Alert, Alert! UFOs have Arrived from Fantasy Flight with XCOM

Fantasy Flight Games has released the long awaited XCOM: The Board Game. We first saw this at GenCon this past summer and it was met with huge lines and enthusiastic gamers salivating to get there hands on it. Well the wait is no more and you too can get this hybrid of a board game with a computer component. This type of game seems to be a trend these past months with not only this game, but also Golem Arcana hitting the shelves.
In this game you are humanity's last hope as you play one of the leaders of a special group tasked with the unenviable job of preventing and reacting to an alien invasion. This is a tactical combat and resource management game, where the tablet plays the AI for the attacking alien invasion force. Remember all of your actions are on a time clock, so the longer you take to react to a new threat the less time you have for the next mission.
The game is pretty exciting and it is nice to know that one player does not have to manage the threat in this game, so all players can get deep into their character. The app for XCOM: The Board Game is a free download and is required to play the game. What do you think of technology making it's way into tabletop gaming? Does it have a place or is it an intruder?
Will you accept the challenge and defend the Earth from invasion?

Great idea. The technology is readily available to do it. I don’t have a tablet but games and products like these have made it work its way to the top of the list. Of course I could just use my phone…
