Airfix Battles Availible In May – Modiphius Takes Pre-Orders
January 21, 2016 by stvitusdancern
Modiphius is now accepting pre-orders for the new soon to be released wargame, Airfix Battles Introductory Wargame set.
This new game will be based on WWII and will include everything you will need to play the game. In the box you will get...
- 2 x Double-sided A2(420mm x 594mm) Maps
- Over 100 cardboard counters of tanks, infantry and terrain!
- 1 x 16 page Mission Book
- 1 x 32 page Rule Book including rules for solo play up to 4 players
- 1 x 54 Card Force Deck
- 1 x 54 Card Command Deck
- 10 x Six-Sided Dice
Yes, you get cardboard tokens for your infantry and vehicles. However, this a good thing, because anyone can pick up the box set, take it home and get playing right away.
We all know what happens next, they see that it can be played with miniatures and they are going to want to get some to add some more dimension to their game and this leads us all done the path of "shiny syndrome!" Oh, what a clever idea to get new players hooked. You can even get one of these sets and give it as a gift to that friend of yours that you have been trying to get into wargames for quite some time.
If you pre-order now you will receive a bonus pdf campaign Operation: Cobra and a bonus of twenty card Reinforcement Pack 1 consisting extra British units and tanks like the German King Tiger and Sherman Calliope rocket launcher tank! This looks like it can be very habit forming.
Besides we all have some old Airfix models lying around somewhere in the house, don't we? The game is currently up for pre-order til May. I have ordered mine, what about you?
Do you think this is a good entry into wargaming?

“this is good thing”? Bah, Humbug!
How can it be called Airfix and not include a single model?
i was thinking the same thing
What scale would the models be in?
There are no minis but the artwork on the cards is the same as the artwork on Airfix’s 1/72 scale minis
This is good thing because it allows non-war gamers an intro into the world without a huge investment of time and costs. This is meant as a lead in to actual tabletop war gaming.
ummm sorry but Airfix make models, cardboard cut outs in a game, this reminds me of my youth in the late 70’s early 80’s when companies were turning out crap Star Wars games with persist cardboard stormtroopers. I’ve heard of retro fashion but this is taking the P.
We’re not Airfix though, we’re making a boardgame introduction to wargaming, which keeps the price right down by not including plastic figures that you and most people already have piles off in the attic or garage. They’re also super cheap being £6 for 48 figures in pretty much every toy store and model shop. Don’t you think it would be annoying to have to pay more money for something that included more of those German infantry and US Marines that you already had. There are no standups but proper quality boardgame counters so you can play it out of the… Read more »
The ‘pinned’ and ‘retreat’ statuses at the edges of those cards are a neat detail.
Sorry my bloody computer always corrects things should have read press-out stormtroopers,
I think it is a good thing. It’s an introductory rule set that comes with cardboard counters just in case you don’t have any figures.
I got my first pack of many Airfix soldiers back in 1963. It wasn’t until about 6 years later when I came across a book which explained how to use them in an organised game. 46 years later I’m still playing.
Hopefully this will be someone’s gateway in 2016
yup plus the kids can’t break a tank learning (that you’ve spent hours) making.
Looks like a good option. You should be able to kit two armies out and have the rules for about 50 quid. Cheap terrain too. With simple rules this should be a good beer and pretzels game. Lots of choices with suppliers too. I’ll be buying a box or too and some bases. Armour fast tanks are dirt cheap as well.
would be a good road trip game??
I would pick it up just for this reason. Spending one weekend a month away from home and packing up minis just isn’t an option.
personally, i like the look of this one and will be picking it up 🙂
That does seem interesting. It might not be my cup of tea but I do hope that this game takes off succesfully.
