Go Adventuring With Privateer’s Widower’s Wood Kickstarter

Widower's Wood is now live on Kickstarter and the team at Privateer Press have pushed through their first stretch goal and are now looking towards more heroes and creatures for their world of Iron Kingdoms adventure...
Have you backed this game yet?
The Core Game
The base game of Widower's Wood sees you playing as a group of unlikely heroes looking to preserve their homeland. You're all considered to be monsters by many but it's time to show what the folks of the wilderness are really like...
"In the dark wilderness of the Iron Kingdoms, an ancient evil stirs. Led by a merciless witch doctor, an army of sinister creatures and terrifying beasts plot to awaken a long-forgotten terror. Should they succeed, the lives and homes of countless swamp-dwelling tribes will face a fate worse than death.
As the inhabitants of Widower’s Wood find themselves trapped in the grim maw of ghoulish horrors, their last hope is a team of ravenous monsters with the cunning and ferocity to bite back."
The villains of this piece are looking just as interesting. I love the look of these miniatures and it's a real testament to the world of Hordes that it can provide tabletop gamers with such diverse creature designs to enjoy. Which will you most enjoy hunting?
Inside the main game you get...
- Campaign Guide with 7 Linked Adventures
- 43 Plastic Figures
- 4 Hero Character Sheets
- 202 Cards
- 202 Tokens and Markers
- 8 Dice
- 16 Map Tiles
- Game Board
- Villain Reference Sheet
- Rulebook
...and they already have plans for an expansion which will be produced with help of the Kickstarter. This takes the form of Dead Men Walking.
Inside this expansion you'll get...
- Campaign Guide with two 3-chapter campaigns
- 21 Plastic Figures
- 38 Cards
- 20+ Tokens and Markers
- 8 Map Tiles
...which of course means more game time and more adventures to play out with your adventurers.
Stretch Goals
It wouldn't be a Kickstarter without some stretch goals and therefore we have a peek at two of them. The first has already been unlocked and the second is being closed in on by backers.
It's interesting to see some more humans being dropped into the mix and while the models look good from what we've seen I can't wait until we get a peek at what Trollbloods will be taking up the mantle of adventurer.

Bit of a shame Privateer didn’t make more of this. No reason why it couldn’t expand to a full blown game, a sort of ‘junior Warmachine’ for new/younger players.
I think the concept is a little more of Dungeon Crawler set in the Iron Kingdoms.
With this set, they’re going to have two core boxes to play from, plus two full expansions (and that’s not counting any of the Kickstarter stuff).
I might pick it up just for the RPG minis, but I also hear that the Undercity was a good game.
Interesting to see PP doing Kickstarter at all. In this case I think KS works much more as PR catalyzer than an actually tool to finance the game. This whole craze about stretch goals and unlocks is like an addicting gamble for backers. And PP can sell all stuff without a retail margin. These days with so many new games competing I guess games have a much shorter lifespan, it might be a similar situation to video games where 80% of lifetimes sales for a game are generated within 4-6 weeks after release. Sales via Kickstarter might ramp up similar… Read more »
I think that’s pretty decent insight.
I might pick up Undercity and give it a go. With the lower Aussie dollar it works out much cheaper for me to wait for it to hit retail stores here than use Kickstarter for this.
Looks promising.
