Here's something to brighten up your weekend as YouTuber Actualol has come up with a musical number on how board games are Not Just For Geeks Anymore!
Now, we all know well that board games are awesome, and their explosion in popularity has been a joy to behold.
And what can be more joyful than a song about how great it is that's everyone is getting in on the gaming?
With Snag-A-Normie month still fresh in the memory, this could be the perfect thing to show your friend who still thinks that board games are "uncool". Go ahead, prove them wrong through song!
Fancy a sing-along?
Board games have never been a geek thing, period. This narrative came from garbage TV shows like Big Bang Theory, and certain people who are making boat loads of money from that “geeky” image (Wil Wheaton).
There has always been and will always be a line between ‘casual gamers’ and enthusiasts (ie : Geeks). That line may not be as obvious if you have English as your native language, but it is definitely there. Over here the average toyshop only has games in our native language, which means that for a game to reach the casual gamer it has to have a lot of potential just to be considered for translation. And the few that do make that transistion rarely get their expansions translated. Since Settlers of Catan we’ve seen slightly more complex games appear in… Read more »
I agree with most of what you say. I’m not saying board games aren’t for geeks, I’m saying board games are neither niche, nor new or too complex for the ‘normie’. Have you seen what our grand parents played at home? I can assure you, complexity is not a hindrance. The reason more complex games don’t sell that well is mostly game duration. Good luck getting the kids to play 4+ hours at a time, let alone the parents after the kids are finally in bed. Then there’s also market saturation. It’s always “they are dumbing down the game” and rarely if ever a positive response. The dozens of re-skinned variants of Monopoly (and to a lesser extent Risk) are proof that people are willing to buy multiple… Read more »
LOL… awesome! Although ironically you’d have to be something of a geek to get half the jokes in the video!
Whilst using all the geek tropes he can. Meh.
It’s totally ok to laugh at stereotypes; the best humour is funny because it contains a kernel of truth, something adverse or perverse that we recognise but find difficult, awkward or horrible. Although we might say those stereotypes don’t represent ourselves individually or even the entirety of the gaming audience and even that such people can be found in all walks of life, it’s definitely fair to say we all recognise those stereotypes and that the gaming hobby definitely attracts more than its fair share of such people. There’s definitely a higher than average number of socially awkward and/or hygienically… Read more »
Geek’s? do you not mean dice board strategist’s.
Found some really good deals on board games on ebay. Never ordered anything from there before but turned out that it is quite easy, the only problem was that I had to check out my atlanta zip code because I don’t remember it. So now I am waiting for some cool games. And do you guys buy such things on ebay?
