Academy Games Raid Kickstarter With 878 Vikings: Invasions Of England

Keeping us in the Viking spirit with SAGA fresh in the minds and The Last Kingdom back on the BBC we have Academy Games coming to Kickstarter with their latest project, 878 Vikings - Invasions Of England.
In this game, you play in in teams as you struggle for control of England with the Vikings and their Berserkers facing off against the Saxon Huscarls and Thegns. You will be battling it out each phase to raise soldiers to your banner, moving around the board to capture settlements and playing event cards from your hand to turn the tide of war in your favour.
I like the idea of this being a team game where you can have players working together and planning out strategies. It feels more in keeping with the period with the various leaders having to work out their differences and hold back the advancing Viking forces.
Pledges & Add-Ons
There are a few different levels you can pledge at for this game and I've taken both extreme ends of the spectrum here...
As you can see you can get the game for relatively cheap as part of this project which also includes a bunch of stretch goals and more. Going all in, however, adds more to your list of goodies including that rather epic 54mm West Britain Duel...
..and who could pass up adding these plastic miniatures into the game as your leader tokens as the armies march around the battlefields of England?
This game feels like it would be a great 'Historical' dip into the world of Vikings as you wage war for the different Kingdoms. You never know, you might end up learning something about the conflicts of the period from this game.
The tug of war style way that the game plays out and the team based mechanics in here really sell this as a strategic game to take a closer look at.
What do you think?

It reminds me a bit actually a lot like the old Brittania game
Looks like it would be brilliant to use as a campaign system for Saga or Swordpoint, outside of the included game as well
I was thinking the same thing …
There are plenty of operational/strategic level games for WW2 era games, but this era doesn’t.
And there’s something about it that makes it look accessible, which is something not many games at that level achieve.
I did see the V word and got interested
??? where the hell’s Scotland ???
or are we classed as barbarians as well.
Maybe you’ll be an expansion
hopefully looks a good game with great figures.
I’m trying to be realistic about this. I very rarely get to play a board game so I really shouldn’t even be considering this but I’m not sure I can ignore it for long.
it got models for the leaders
in for an early bird so far
I have played a few in the birth of America series and the mechanic is fantastic, this game I’m sure will be just as good, can’t wait! Backed without hesitation.
neat looking game, sadly I cannot afford to go in at the pledge level I would like, so will have to pass on this. One small niggle why do they use an American flag to represent the English language? I know the company is American, but the game is set in England…lol
looks interesting
