New Wave Of Blood Red Skies Now Available From Warlord Games
May 5, 2018 by brennon
Warlord Games has bombed John's wallet to hell it seems. Blood Red Skies is now available for you to snap up from them over on their online store.
The Starter Set that you see above gives you all manner of bits and bobs to start playing the game with including British Spitfires and Messerschmitts battling in the skies above Europe. If you're interested in how the game plays then you can check out one of our Let's Plays for the game here...
We also have another episode of the Let's Play series where we fight with Japanese & US forces.
Expansions
As well as the core set which you can see above we also have some new Squadron Packs from Warlord Games.
British Spitfire Squadron
German BF-109E Squadron
US P-51 Mustang Squadron
Japanese A6MX Zero-Sen Squadron
Soviet Yak1 Squadron
So, if you want to start expanding your collection and looking towards different aircraft from the period you have a great set of options here. Each of them come in those different colours meaning you don't have to paint them, but hopefully by now, you'll have followed enough of John's painting streams to know how to get to work on these.
Will you be getting into Blood Red Skies?

How does this compare to Wings of Glory. Setting aside the pre painted planes what is the difference in the games?
From what I have seen blood red skies is more suited to larger engagements, with an abstracted positioning system. Less focus on individual planes and shooting them down more of a squadron attrition mechanism. Movement is more free form but still restricted. There are some good lets plays that will show you the mechanics on the site.
Thanks. Really liking the looks of this game. Very tactical rather than just pew pew and down all the opposition planes.
Good looking figure’s
My interest was hooked when I saw it was aircraft and the unique base with disadvantage, neutral, and advantage. But I was able to hold back from jumping right in. Then I saw the Warlord table @ Salute, (when covered by BoW), and then I had to get the game. The sight of a 1:200 aircraft carrier on the table and all those planes protecting and the others attacking was just too much for me to hold back. I bought the core set which comes with Spits and 109’s, then grabbed the mustangs and zeros. It’s quick to learn and… Read more »
I love aerial gaming, and your plan sounds amazing. I probably have too much invested in 1:600 myself, and a choice of rules between CY6 and Bag the Hun. Still, never say never…
That would be a hell of a set up.
Definately tempted by this thinking going Germans and US while my mate goes Brits and Japs, that way we can do some starter swaps. The salute board really sold me, may have some other ideas for a board I want to explore.
I was going to jump on this but I’ve already got Battle of Britain stuff in 1/600. If they do a Pacific starter set then I’ll get it.
I picked up the starter set at Salute. No regrets!! Rules are really good fun and minis are just the right size and level of detail.
There is a part of me that wishes that Warlord would do a follow on with modern planes but one can dream 🙂
I am a bit concerned about the durability of the plastic bases. They are central to the game, and will get a lot of wear tilting back and forward. I can see that Warlord might not be keen to sell packs of them as you could then use other planes such as Zvezda 1/200 scale.
The bases are pretty robust, and from what I understand warlord are going to be selling separate bases as they know they are not going to be able to release a lot of planes as quickly as vthey would like, rumours are they are in discussion with the likes of Zvezda to get some of their planes used in the range 🙂
The only concern I have about the game, is the composition of the first packs. All get planes that were around in 1940/41. Only the US-Boys get a much later plane. It takes a bit of the flavour away. OK the A6M5 is also a later model but could easily taken as a A6M1. Only the stat cards must be changed.
Why don’t take Hellcats or Warhawks as US starter?
Anyway, the game is great 🙂
I think they went with iconic planes to draw people in. There are plans to introduce a lot more aircraft.
