Let’s Play: Blood Red Skies – Brits VS Germans
April 18, 2018 by johnlyons
Chocks away! We're about to play a game of this new World War II tabletop miniature aircraft combat game from Warlord Games, written by renowned developer Andy Chambers.
Using the Battle of Britain starter set the guys will be playing as British Spitfires versus German Messerschmitt BF109s for a classic aerial scenario.
If you missed it be sure to check out our unboxing of the starter set to see everything included.
What do you guys think of this system for bringing air combat to life?

What a tanker watched and loved and now this..!!!! been waiting weeks for your first video battle
This video was nice to watch. Maybe my daily madness is a bit postponed today, but I have the impression the game is rather quick and easy to learn. When I was looking for the available box sets with all the factions I thought there were rather few models, but with six planes per side you can obviouslay have a decently big game, That game we watched lasted 80 minutes with just the aircraft from the starter set. Reduce 10 min for explanations and add 10 min for board set-up and you´re still at round about 80 min. Although, 10… Read more »
Nice video and cool to see that you can actually score a win without scoring any kills by simply forcing the enemy to break off because of spent fuel/ammo and minor damage.
That almost happened here with how well you were both rolling to dodge fire.
However, doesn’t the 180 turn gained from burning advantage replace the end-of-move 45 degree?
That would make it a bit more difficult to get into a tailing position.
Looking forward to getting my hands on the stuff I’ve pre-ordered.
I thought the same about the 180deg turn. You do that at any point in the move rather than a 45deg turn at the end.. doing both is certainly aerobatic!
pretty sure rules say you can’t do the 45 deg turn on top of the 180
Picked this up at Salute after watching a demo game…plus the table Warlord had with the 1:200 USS Hornet was eye-catching. BRS is a fun game that is easy to learn but has a good layer of tactical depth in the interplay between aircraft, it really captures the feeling of a swirling dogfight. I’m looking forward to playing some multi-squadron games.
Some nice camera work, like the handheld camera shots… more please, or a mini tripod to get us closer to the table
I am really looking forward to hearing what other aircraft are planned for release. The Hurricane has been mentioned other videos. And I think I saw Wildcats in the Salute photos. If they stick with the Battle of Britain theater for a while, could we be seeing JU-87s and Bf-110s as well?
So looking forward to getting the planes on the table, and expanding the range in my collection:-)
a great video guys.
Okay, this may have sold me on the game … when is the bootcamp 😉
Seems to have a lot of tactical options! I’m painting up starter set now and daydreaming about a WWI version…I demand a Spad XIII. Anyone remember the old PC game Red Baron?
Yes i was also thinking ww1 too, and also i wonder what the planes would be like for K47 ?
Not sure you can burn advantage in a cloud, as the ace was in a disadvantaged position, so i think you can only burn if you are advantaged or neutral.
So if you are neutral, you would burn advantage down into a disadvantaged state, but then when leaving the cloud he’d go back up into neutral.
Andy Chamber did this in one of the first videos – looks like you go to Neutral in a cloud & can, therefore, burn advantage to come out in a dive or 180 turn… still in Neutral! Game designer cheese was mentioned 🙂
I’ve painted up the six Spitfires from the box, I just for Sailor Malan, and Sunday I’ll swap a mate the six 109’s I have for his Spitfires. I’m super looking forward to playing Sunday.
Good game, shame about the awful rubber models.
over on the BRS facebook page, they mentioned Hurricanes, Mosquitoes, FW190 & Bf110 as the next plastic later this year… can’t wait!
I like how even though there didn’t seem to be a lot of successful shooting, the tension just kept rising and rising as the game went on. Reflecting how these pilots wouldn’t necessarily fight until everyone was dead, but that at some point the squadron would have to break away to save itself for different day.
I wonder is there a mechanic, or a scenario special rule, that imposes a time limit on the attacking force representing the fact that they are running low on fuel and have to break away before they run empty?
so this is what all the fuss is about – looks so fun and awesome game to play 🙂
Finally watched it to the finosh. Excellent game , well played in showing what can be done.
Once it’s out, I will have to pick it up. Glad other video mentioned hurricanes are coming…so most likely Me110’s so it should make for a real dogfight with 2 to 3 squadrons per side.
