Head To ‘Nam With New Miniatures Game By Battlefront
February 8, 2018 by brennon
Battlefront is going to be moving to the jungles of Vietnam with their new 'Nam Rulebook release. This time around the system used draws on the Team Yankee mechanics to fuel your battles.
The new book helps bring you into the fighting between the US and their enemies during the period. As mentioned above, it is also powered by the Team Yankee engine so if you're familiar with that system you will have a nice transition to this. It's very easy to learn and supports playing Historical games without too much hassle.
There is a dedicated website for the game HERE where you can dive into more but also make sure to check out Oriskany's article series HERE which has been covering Vietnam and the Tet Offensive.
Supporting Forces
As well as a book, the team at Battlefront have put together a set of plastic boxes to support the launch. We start off with the Black Horse Armoured Cavalry Troop.
This is for your US army to bring to the tabletop and comes with M113 Armored Personnel Carriers, M551 Sheridans, and an M48 Patton. It's a heavily armoured assault on your enemies that is focused on wiping them out before they get a chance to react.
If you would prefer playing as the PAVN Forces on the tabletop then you have access to the K-2 Ironclad Battalion instead.
Inside this set, you get your hands on the T-54 Tanks and ZSU-57-2 so you have some answers to the armour of the Americans as well as something to watch the skies too. You will need to be looking up as the US are also bringing the Air Mobile Air Cavalry into play. It wouldn't be Vietnam without Helicopters...
As well as three different types of helicopters, you will also get a squad of troops that you can drop onto the tabletop. Infantry can get a lot done in games, securing vital objectives and more. Hopefully, we'll see Battlefront repackage and create more options for you going forward on the infantry front for both sides.
Are you going to be giving this a go?

Book and The black horse company ordered with some vietnamese infantry : Can’t wait to get more !!
I sure will. I love @Oriskany´s series and I´m looking for new minis, too. Not owning helicopters at all as yet, the Air Mobile Cavalry set will be my first choice. Hopefully they bring out some “infantry only” plastic sets as well. That´ll be nice. I mean for Amerincans as well as for the other side. – And I´m looking forward to the billboard charts included in the book. This´ll surely help to get some of the feeling of the time into the gaming, assembling and asking poor @Oriskany many many nervy questions.
Please don’t worry about the questions, @jemmy . I have word count constraints when writing those articles, so when I’m making the tough calls of what to keep in and what to drop out, I’m always telling myself: “Well, maybe someone will ask or comment about that in the comments …” Gives us a chance to cover the rest of the material that wouldn’t fit into the article. 😀 And I know what you mean about the infantry-only sets. A lot of that NVA armor looks great, but it’s really only “historically useful” for a very limited set of battles.
Loving the boxed sets.
Those Plastic T55s will work for Team Yankee, too. Battlefront confirmed they’ll build the AM2 variant used by the East Germans.
The only real question is, is the beach safe to surf?
Charlie don’t surf
And they’re bringing in the marines too. God has a ****** for marines.
… because we kill … EVERYTHING we see!
God … was here before the Marine Corps.
So you can give your heart to Jesus!
But your ass …
… belongs …
… to the CORPS!
Promptly ordered another US Marines Rifle Platoon..
25% off at the moment 😎
@suetoniuspaullinus – Now there’s a man ^^ who has the right idea. 😀
Perhaps I can get my Black Horse or ANZAC forces out from the previous two versions that Battlefront have issues of ‘nam!
The minis are all valid, though the exact force structure may have changed a bit, and the basic book definately has ANZACs in it.
Thanks very much for the mention and tie-in to the Tet Offensive article series, @brennon . 😀
I might buy some of this AH-1s (already have a bunch of UH-1s). Also at least one OH-6, although it might wind up painted “T.C.” style in “Magnum P.I.” colors!

If we really want Vietnam tank vs. tank battles, though, we need ARVN M41 Walker Bulldogs, etc., for the 1972 Spring Offensive and 1975 Invasion. Battle of Xuan Loc vs. 18th ARVN Infantry Division, etc.
And an extra Hind or two ? 😛
I know … I will get my coat
Yes, the “Hinds” Tom Selleck used to chase when flying around in T.C.’s chopper – or that Ferrari 308 he used to drive.

I wonder if anyone makes a 1:100 Ferrari? I could start a 7TV collection based on this. 😀 😀 😀
Am I the only one who thinks air mobile is the way to go, purely for thematic reasons?
So tempted to have a ‘nam film and tv day. Don’t suppose anyone remembers the uk series anout a uk photographer in ‘nam do they? Memory is gone ok series based on an interesting biography.
A great air cav film is We were soldiers I was a bit shocked when the song started with the strong Scottish accent in a US film.

Unfortunately it seems like they will be scrapping most of the Huey Gunships for this rulebook. Maybe they will add them again in a later release, but I had an “online” flick through the book and couldn’t find any Hogs, Frogs, etc..
If this is true and they push the Huey into an “only” transporting / medevac / C&C role, that would be a real shame.
I saw a similar flip through on Youtube. It looks like they took existing materials and modified it to the newer rules. I remember seeing the section on the Ia Drang and it looked like the same article written some years ago. IIRC, that section had the Hog, so maybe it´s there and was missed during the flip?
