Happy Sunday!
Welcome back Warzan 😉
don’t know when you filmed this but would have thought FFG new scalable rank and file runewar game would suggest a move away from self contained game in a box attitude to a more collectable hobby based attitude from one of the biggest players in the industry and is probably the main reason for no more gw licensed games .has this will be direct competition for aos and that can only be bad news for gw because the next logical step would be a sci-fi based tabletop game Anyone up for a 28mm licensed star wars or halo I know… Read more »
Came out after filming 🙂
Remember a 100m company built on the 40k business modal, so there is somthing to it, but thats not where we have seen the most growth over the last year or two 🙂
Ultimately it boils down to generalising a bit, but accessible products in theory will out perform non accessible ones at greater market scales (generally)
Probably miles off the mark but I don’t see ffg’s foray into tabletop fantasy as anything more than a me too exercise, possibly to test out supply chain before doing a star wars game. Wonder if they do that if the minis would be pre painted? As for competition to AoS other than being fantasy I don’t see it, its like saying krull is competition to lotr. Sure if you only look at it as a proliferation of rulesets, but AoS does have 30+ years of community, sure the fluff days the old world is no more but people have… Read more »
I think that part of the growth in the gaming world has been down to people being brought into games ready to play oob, this works really well to bring in new players to our community.
Also it is having another curious effect i have noticed, the older generation of Historical gamer is being drawn into the whole thing by FFG there are guys who when i first met them would not have looked twice at a sci-fi game but are now hooked on x-wing because they find it easy and dont have to spend ages painting.
“would have thought FFG new scalable rank and file runewar game would suggest a move away from self contained game in a box attitude to a more collectable hobby based attitude” There isn’t really anything new in RuneWars that FFG haven’t done before in terms of how they distribute the game. There’s obviously X-Wing and Armada, though this looks to be very much like Imperial Assault. You buy a big boardgame-esque box with all the minis, tokens, dials, and dice you get in a FFG game. You expand on it with medium box, small box, and individual mini packs. You… Read more »
I really cant say whether its is a dry run for star wars or not… except that Runewars is Fantasy Flights in house IP and take a look at the interlocking movement trays if this was a proof of concept pitch (the most likely scenario) why would they go through the process of making plastic movement trays? I can’t imagine star wars would have them. Rank and file doesn’t lend itself to sci fi very well at all. If it were a dry run or proof of concept ANDROID would be a better fit, no rank and file and similar… Read more »
The dry run would be more along lines of manufacture, distribution, and reception, rather than gameplay.
@redben for me it makes sense that they would treat PPP as a separate thing entirely if nothing else for the decades of PPP starwars toys that exist, no idea who they contract to do the painting for X-Wing, but i wouldnt be surprised if they dont have a heritage in producing kids toys, so there is going to be a massive difference to the volumes in the IP lines. As such i would expect that anything starwars they produce has at least 3 extra zero’s added to the quantity so the cost of tooling and training the workforce in… Read more »
in the interview the guy from fantasy flight was saying if you wanted to get into the hobby side you have that through building and painting, so my guess is they won’t be pre paints.
RuneWars definitely isn’t PPP. I’m interested to see if the factions come in different colour plastic.
I think it’s a smart move by FFG to get to the miniature/hobby game market with something not as big as Star Wars first. Fantasy rank and file is the obvious “void” in the market so why not go with that. There’s testing of the supply chain like you wrote, but also the whole marketing side and seeing what the gamers expect in terms of product quality, do they need to sell terrain and hobby/paint kits, etc.
@Redben the minis will not be different colours, I specifically asked that if the idea was to get them on the table as soon as possible. They may change their tune when they go to actual launch.
Halo Ground, Battle for Reach, SPARTAN GAMES. 28 mm Halo game, expandable. You ask, you receive.
halo ground battles is unfortunatley 15mm scale while very nicely done and looking like a great game its not the mass market breaker 28mm might have been
Really l9king the Konflikt 47 gear. It’s got a WWII meets 40k IG feel about it. Looking forward to the unboxing
Even if I don’t win the competition I’ll be getting a hold of a set of the US starter set for Konflict ’47. I think that weird world war is going to be really big over the next few months!
LOL Meet this bollack with legs up my dungeon… WELCOME BACK WARZAN!
Welcome back Warren, I am really happy to see you back on the show.
I really like the look of Konflikt 47, I also like the fact that I can use my existing Bolt Action minis and just add one or two “weird” items to try the game with a difference. I wish more game systems would let you combine systems like this, in fact I wish Dust could have tied into this same system.
I would love to win two starter sets to get my girlfriends brothers away from the virtual gaming, and into the table top world!
im 12 mins in and the guys still haven’t noticed Ben lol
My fault lol 🙂
Everyone was busy with warlord or gencon etc, they hand me a running order and say ‘here make yourself useful and think about xlbs’
May as well have just trown a grenade lol, my eyes light up and off i go like a bull in a china shop getting excited about stuff, and of course meandering through stuff not even on the running order lol
It’s all good haha – but thanks for noticing toshkien!
Konflict’47 does look a lot of fun, saw some pics of the box contents and it does look like a nice starter set, look forward to seeing some gameplay reviews
On dino zoo, ive found some ‘to scale’ little buggy things like worker golf buggies with a open box on the back.
Gonna get some today for zoo staff to use for a speed boost 🙂
@warzan you get to the Viking museum in Dublin?
so how is the game called? Mannypark 🙂 Just checked this xlbs out, I realy enjoyed the dino and meat story 🙂
Konflikt ’47 looks interesting. Weird war stuff is cool. I’m looking forward to this, as well as Bolt Action 2E. Really great that they are compatible with each other and that the various BA theater, army books, and miniatures are fully usable with Konflikt ’47. Very nice. Great going Warlord!
Welcome back Warren. Disappointing show this morning
With eager anticipation I hit the play button waiting to see and hear Lloyd’s eagerly awaited presentation in regards to John Ramsbottom’s displacement lubricator and it’s role in armoured train warfare between 1925 and 1943
Sadly it was not to be
My weekend is ruined
Lol
Probably not the most grognard friendly show this time lol 😉 (except for us industry bean counter type grognards lol)
Maybe Lloyd could do it as a backstage Vlog or maybe just release a PDF of the transcript
Konflikt 47 does interest me so I’m eager for more info.
Welcome back Warren, you always put the Wee in weekender.
Konflict 47 seems to be a -for me- better Bolt Action as I’ve got some problems to play real WW2 games. So I’d love to win this set for being able to play some weird war which is fantasy enough for me not to have moral issues with!
Oh the irony, Warhammer Total War, great success but based on an IP that doesn’t exist anymore.
It pays GW the same either way lol
Happy Sunday … peeps i have to say that i know what Justin means about kingdom death mini’s they are amazing, but its not the sculpts but the paint jobs that are coming out for them that are scaring me…lol
Konflict 47 is an interesting concept especially the origins story i recently watched the first series of Manhattan which is all about the American development of the bombs could be some interesting stuff given the ideas that were flying about in reality
GHQ do some nice 1947 stuff in 6mm but it less pulp Sci-fi than the Warlord game seems to be. I have heard rumours of H&R doing something along these lines as well
Nooooooooooo i have to many other things…..lol
Welcome back Warren. I was going to comment that you had finally taken flight to star in the Wargaming movie, but first, the background gave it away that you shot it in the office and then, Lloyd came on at the end, showing a little gray (maybe it was the lighting or maybe some over spray of paint). Remember, guys, all dinosaurs all the time. Live up to the name BEASTS of War. Make up a poster with Manny riding on a T-Rex for the next Sharknado-like movie for the SyFy channel, Dinosaurs vs. Irishmen. General Justin could lead the… Read more »
One of the best uses of Dyson-sphere type technologies? Peter F Hamilton’s extended series set in the Commonwealth. He’s used some of these ideas in other books but he delves into what being able to build stellar contstructs like Dyson Sphere’s would mean for a cultures psyche and evolution (he plays around with the concept of the Singularity as well. Quite a bit of stuff for Infinity fans to likel…)
Ohh go on and give us an example please mate!!!
Harnessing that kind of power must open incredible possibilities.
@Warzan quite a few dyson spheres in neil ashers polity universe, mainly used for firing moons at adamantium laser crabs (prador) through sub space as well as powering an infinity style human expansion (although controlled by ai’s) prador moon is a pretty good hopping on point to the series
The first book (Pandoras Star) is based around the notion that an Astronomy professor sees a star blink out suddenly. Turns out it was enclosed by a shield generated by a station on the edge of the system. There’s a culture in the later books that has weaponised entire star systems, encircling them with Dyson Sphere’s to power galactic level weaponry, all intended to form a cordon around the void at the center of our galaxy that periodically increases in size. There’s also lots of great stuff with wormhole tech that caused us to bypass conventional space travel so most… Read more »
Dyson. Sphere?….Is that about a vacuum cleaners
its the dyson wheel barrows with the orange ball wheels?
you cover a star with solar panels pointing in, completely enclosing it to harness all of its energy. The main logical flaw with it is that it would take so much energy and resources to do that any civilization capable of doing so would pretty much never have to.
Spot on!
Thanks for the show, entertaining as always. Just wanted to say that the quality of the content of late has really been a cut above (maybe due to the benefits of the studio redesign flowing through??). Everything just seems to have that little bit extra. Also, really loving the hobby lab scatter terrain challenge, really inspired idea and a great way to encourage our community to show off their ideas.
Keep up the good work team!
Happy Sunday!
That guy in the intro – you should get him on the show sometime…
… Oh he is! 😉
You want weird world wars? Very much looking forward to what Wyrd are slowly revealing about “The Other Side”, their ‘more mass’ battle game where things from the Malifaux world crosses back over the Breach to invade our world. Check out the BoW Gencon Wyrd video (Day 2?) for some more tease.
Just because we can’t think of a good reason aliens might attack doesn’t mean they can’t. Until we actually meet aliens pretty much everything we hypothesize about their motivations is just uninformed fiction. I am reasonably certain that humans will attack any alien civilizations that we think we can beat and that might be a threat to us. Also, quite a few of our religions are centered on the premise that humans are special and have a divine right to take/destroy what ever we like. There is also the fact alien life would contradict a lot of religions origin stories… Read more »
Also, found a great set of bits (on Tumblr of all things) that raised some points about how alien races might see Humanity: #Homo Sapiens is utterly unique within the biosphere for our capacity to survive injury that. to any other species, would be potentially life threatening. Break bones and in all bar the most serious cases we heal and are at least functional remarkably quickly. Pain thresholds are noticably higher, and we can survive the loss of multiple limbs as well as massive amounts of soft tissue damage. Our stamina is so remarkable yet we take it for granted:… Read more »
Yeah that comes up in one of the episodes of Enterprise the last of the TV shows, they come to a world which is on the brink of WWII except “ALIEN” WWII and when they are examined they find that we have iron in our blood, and they say how can that be, that’s toxic. Little stuff like that is fun.
Warren, You can call you Dino game, Saurus Safari! Sounds like a cute game and good fun for you and your boy.
Beasts of warasaur
that sounds like its from Poland…lol
Not enough sz, cz, and rz combos in it to the Polish
Oh that is criminal that you had no thumbs up for that here take mine.
