My personal favourite is always use the last dice for your artillery/forward air observer as your opponent can’t dodge out of the way before the start of the next turn when it comes in
(then it’s just up to your dice roll and making sure the strike appears where/when you want it…… which is where I tend to stumble most of the time! 🙂 )
Totally agree about the FAO. Aside from that I’m still getting the hang of strategically holding particular units’ actions until the opposition has already committed. Also one of the things that got me hooked.
It’s best used for indirect fire weapons like howitzers and mortars, I think, though I must admit I tend to get a little excited with the big guns and just tend to shoot them asap and hope the fireworks go off. 😛
I use it all the time as it is a main part of the game. From get a couple of rounds of shooting in on the same enemy unit to running a unit across open ground when needed.
Definitely the best way to use indirect fire weapons.
sound a good way to put a lot of pain in an area quickly.
Hmmm interesting.
very interesting
I try to save my last dice for a unit for whom going twice in a row would be really useful. As @olliep said above, using it on your mortar or howitzer gives 2 bites of the cherry so to speak. If you miss with the first one, you get an easier go next time. That said, indirect fire can force your enemy to move if they don’t have the nerve to wait for the inevitable. But not as good as blowing them to smithereens of course.
Isn’t it all up to the roll of the dice ? You can’t predict when your going to get your dice out of the bag. So you can’t depend on it.
That’s true, but it’s happened loads of times for me. It helps that I generally have more orders dice than the guy I play, but it’s far from guaranteed. It’s worth keeping in mind though because if you are going to be able to zero in on your target with indirect fire at the beginning or end of the turn and by waiting till the end you don’t expose yourself too badly, there is a reasonable able chance that you will be able to act if not as the first dice, certainly one of the first.
