Stop and Drop! Is Going to Ground worth it in 40K
July 23, 2010 by lloyd
I can’t stress enough how annoying I find playing someone who just gives up and doesn't take there dice rolls, instead opting to lift troops off the table assuming they will die. That’s where Going to Ground comes in, in some situations it increases a units survival chances and it’s much better to try and keep a unit in the game even if they can do nothing because your opponent will have to continue dealing with them.

why is the quality so bad
You have to give Youtube time to render the full res video – be patient, as an indicator it appears that if the video opens and the resolution choice isn’t displayed then the render hasn’t finished ….. feel free to contradict folks 🙂
the imperial guard have the go to dround order which gives them +2 to thier cover save and then the command squad can give the order of get back into the fight the next turn and they get to shoot.just wonder but after giving the get back in the fight order then shooting with that until can u order them back to get in thier fox holes? for the +2 to thier cover save
Sadly, no. A unit can only receive 1 order each turn.
unfortunately the crappy thing is u cant issue the order “Incoming” to a guard squad on his shooting phase so no u dont get the +2 to cover u only get the 6 cover save. I to play guard and i found out i couldnt do that lol.
its a option to use it, so use it id say. granted its a slim one but its better than no save to keep a unit in the game..
this is a cheasy tactic but if you are really lucky i think this is a good idea for objective taking
“For Russ, For the Emporor!”
I’ll take a crappy save over no save any day.
is thier a page in the codex that says not more then one order can be given. im just hunting for cheese. i dont see it on the first page with the orders and when u can give orders and about the double 1 or double 6’s/ cause i dont see why not u cant do this. and if i cant i can still choose to go to ground cause that is when i take a hit. all it said is orders muyst be given from the command squad first then officers and befor the shoot or run
Pg 29 of the IG codex “Orders cannot be given to units that that are embarked in a transport, or units that have already run, made a shooting attack or have already received an order that turn”
it only said that the officer cannot issue an order if they have already ran or shot. and it doesnt say anything about an order already given. maybe if ur more specific cause ur info is spread out and maybe i wasnt looking in the same direction. but i already know 1 order can be givin. i was talking about something else. as in order them to get down giving them +2 on thier cover save and then next turn order them to stand up and shoot and if they get soht at. then they go to ground
I think it all depends on the army you play as. Space marine armor saves them from most anything. My Termagants though just love this little rule when taking fire from most weapons out there. Its a great tactic too, allowing one unit in your list to become the main shooting focus for your enemy thus they forget about the advancing bigger units.
Going to ground is for queers and vegetarians!
Thank you, I’m both of those.
Making a stereotype that doesn’t exist is for Fat/Losers (usually both), who are so unhappy with there waste of a life that they feel the need to be hating something there to dumb to even comprehend thanks to the small mindedness or plain stupidity (once again usually both)
see, did as i do, use a stereotype that’s true (i mean, you have proved this one).
stupid trolls..
One time I lost a whole tactical squad under a battle cannon blast and forgot I could have tried to at least save the sergent and the heavy bolter or sumthin!
forgot just the one time. I wish I could say the same thing. I keep forgetting about going to ground. I’ll get hit be a battle cannon and take the unit off the board and then remember I could have gone to ground.
yeah, I don’t get why people just pick off their models in instances like this. Why not play for the chance? You never know what will happen and when the odds get defied in a ridiculous way its the most memorable thing often. Go for it.
This is insane if you put an objective in a bunker.
Problem is with low chance the likelihood of the sergeant or special weapon surviving is still low on a 6+
Good job!!
Would be good you pass these advicing videos into text… Or put them with subtitles for non english speakers like me… I hardly understand some words when you talk so fast
It takes sometime with Darrel´s accent, but then you get used to it like me, and sounds as normal as the rest.
I lost 10 Banshees in one shot. I was not happy. Too bad I forgot I could go to ground.
why didnt they just take an armor save?
From this vid I got the impression that you can lie dwon in your opponent’s turn ( I mean, instead of taking your models off lie down and get a save). But did I hear this wrongly, or can you actually lie down in your opponent’s turn?
It’s on page 24 of the rule book. You can choose to go-to-ground after roles to hit and rolls to wound from shooting are made. You elect to go-to-ground and this adds +1 to your cover save.
STOP DROP AND ROLL
STOP DROP AND ROLL
STOP DROP AND ROLL
(all the while, the dice rolled less than needed)
Thanks Darrrel, in the past I have never had my units go to ground, because I always thought it was pointless. But you’re right 6+ is better than nothing.
i use this rule for my eldar pathfinders. With the +2 coversave increase and +1 for going to ground they are almost impossible2 shift off a peice of terrain, usually getting 2up coversaves
i think there should be a bonus to shooting on the second turn. the reason for this is on the first you have sorted your shell scrape. on the second you are in a prone position wich makes shooting easy and get a bonus +1 but -1 for hand to hand
Good tip. This is something I always forgot about and would come in handy when getting hit by a Plasma Cannon or something similar.
Would it work for Orbital bombardment?
I think its a great tip especially at end game if your on an objective.
on your youtube versions can you have a link in the sidebar (dooblydoo) to the vid on beast of war .com, so if i click on it i can jump strait to bow to comment 🙂 thanks
i play gaurd and i lie ’em down for ages until support arrives, i have had my command squad grounded (in terain) for 3 turns and took 2 casualtys! useful to keep em alive, and if your holding back troops to take obs, then i lie em until they need to run for life at the objective its always a good idea
Hey Darrell lovin the dailies. Quick request if possible. Would like to see a vid on how the new Always Strikes First rules work… in particular with regards to High Elves and also if unit has Always Strikes last for some reason.
Probably not the best place to post a request, if you guys even do requests, but there it is. 😀
Send the question to ask@beastsofwar.com – we are only working on requests there as its a bit easier to manage 🙂
Gotcha. 🙂
if i play my scouts who sits in a piece of terrain with 4+ cover save, and they have camo cloaks that gives +1, and my techmarine have improved the cover so its gives an additionel +1. If i then go to ground do i get a 1+ cover save??
The best save possible is 2+, a roll of 1 always fails no matter what
