Going 2nd is very effecive when you have a assault army vs assault army that do not have fleet or jump packs as you deploy 14″ from the centre, not 12″ as you are 26″ away:
1st turn 1st player -20″ away 2nd player-14″ away
2nd turn 1st player-8″ away 2nd player – Reaches unit to assault.
Your right, you should allways go 2nd in objective based games
Well, if you have a shooty army this does contradict the fact that shooting first does (should) reduce your opponents ability to shoot back at you in his turn (as you would take out some threats). There is a saying out there that “who ever shoots first, wins” – ofcourse like everything else revolving around 40k this should be taken with a pinch of salt and used more vigorously with killpoints than objectives. But still, this way of combat contradicts that “you should always go 2nd”… although I, myself do prefer that often 🙂
