Don’t Get Turned Into Stone By Arena Rex’s Medusa
August 11, 2015 by brennon
Arena Rex have been working on a new model for their gladiatorial combat game. This new warrior will turn you to stone as she stabs you with her deadly looking spear. See what you think of Medusa...
The artwork for this model was done by Yasmine Putri and the sculpting by Benoit Cauchies. She is a stunning piece and while a lot of the musculature has been taken out of the final sculpt she has retained a lot of her power.
"A sway of the hips, and a sibilant hiss in the wrong temple had this otherworldly beauty condemned by Athenian decree to eternally hide her face and was driven from the only home she had ever known, exiled by the Hellenic League for impiety.
Allowed to return for only ten days a year when the borders open for the Olympian games, she vents her rage and frustration in the arena, mocking Athenian wisdom and custom with every chance she gets."
I particularly like how they've managed to get the veil looking so realistic on the model. It will be quite a challenge to paint that as something semi-transparent! Interestingly, and it could be something from mythology, but she appears to have stolen Athena's shield with the owl on it!
As well as the artwork and model Arena Rex showed off some of the benefits for running three of the Gorgons in your games. While I can't speak to their tactical uses myself I'm sure some players of the game will get some joy out of this!
What do you think?

They managed to pull off that veil very well. You do get the sense it is transparent in intent with this sculpt.
Yep I like the veil too. It does makes sense and looks superb.
Has anyone played Arena Rex? Is it fun?
I know a lot of people that would love to buy that stuff but there is no european distributor and its just annoying to pay expensive shipping and customs on top of that. They had literally years to set something up for non us customers, but nope.
Guess there is the difference between a good looking system and an successful one.
Agreed! Would love to get in on this! Be awesome hobby project to build your own coliseum too! 😀
But as you point out, withput an EU outlet, they are just pictures…. 🙁
That looks really good.
Vote that this be Romain’s next painting project. How would you paint that veil? I guess a light gray or white . . with just a touch of flesh tone in it to suggest its translucence?
Whatever the case, she’d better be careful. It’s a dangerous world out there, it looks like she could trip at any second.
Jessica Rich does a lot of the translucense cloth. Only seen her do it in a teaser trailer for her Dark Sword painting DVD. From what I’ve seen it involves painting flesh on the parts where the cloth is up against the skin and blending in more and more of the cloth color the further you go up, until you have just opaque cloth.
These minis are really stunning…honestly from what I’ve seen of Arena Rex they are at or nearly on par with Kingdom Death.
Marike Reimer also does transparent cloth quite often, but the simplest method I’ve heard came from Zach Lanier.
The places where the skin shows through the cloth in the sculpt (ie, everywhere were there aren’t folds) paint in your fleshtone as if it were naked skin. After you paint the rest of the cloth, go over the skin with layers of glazes in your cloth color, until it looks like translucent cloth.
Honestly, I’m quite certain that we’ll be seeing this beauty at the painting competitions. She’s just built for it.
First time I really gave these guys a look and my bank account is now a bit lighter for it…the gf is going to laugh that once again i “couldn’t resist”
Fantastic, and yes I can see myself buying her, although I fear I’ll never be able to carry off a decent paint job for the sheer/semi-transparent gauzy fabric.
I’ve seen it done on a number of models (i.e Darksword) and am always blown away by it.
It’s sorcery I tells you.
This would be such a great painting challenge!
Love the model but as with others with no European distribution I could just not afford the additional customs and delivery charges. For a painting challenge this looks phenomenal!
