Unboxing: Age of Sigmar – Soul Wars
June 14, 2018 by dignity
Justin and John are excited to open up the new Age of Sigmar: Soul Wars core set from Games Workshop.
After immediately choosing which side they want to play as (Justin on the dread legions of Nighthaunt and John on the Sacrosanct chamber), the guys go through the components included in this core set. After assembling we get to see the impressive detail of the miniatures and a little tease of the lore for Soul Wars.
How would you want to paint the Knight of Shrouds?

Totally going for a luminous green and white look for the undead in this set, and red, sort of Roman look, for the Stormcast. So yeah, airbrush heaven with all this.
Yep will be order this and the spells box at the weekend.
They will break nicely when transported to game night 🙁
Have to look for this tomorrow in my local gamestore
This is a really nice starter. However, I will just get the core rules now.
Just downloaded the new core rules, will be giving them a rattle tomorrow with some Stormcast and Nurgle.
Great unboxing – GW are knocking it out of the park these days, they have won me back to their worlds, let’s hope this trend continues !! 🙂
I’m not fond of Age of Sigmar as I have many ‘grim’ memories of the Old World and dislike the sigmar army (basically space marines), but I do like the Undead in that box.
And some of the other armies are very cool… Sisters of Khaine and Idoneth Deepkin.
Malign Sorcery and those Endless Spells… that’s just nasty… in a fun way.
Looking awesome, we have planned an AoS weekend for when it launches. Will be three gamers who are not currently playing AoS at all, so should be a nice intro.
Hope you get a game down soon!
Really like the look of the undead; as I’ve mentioned elsewhere I have ideas for multipurposing them to use as spirits of Prospero for 40k as well as using them as intended for AoS. On the whole Stormcasts being spirits thing, I think that was a misconception that was bandied around when 1st ed first dropped; iirc from the fluff snippets I read at the time I interpreted them as having physical forms, but others read the same fluff and cake away thinking they were armour animated by spirits ala Rubricae in 40k. Since then the misconception has just been… Read more »
Just realised that the reason for the lack of legs on the Nighthaunt is likely because the design is intentionally copying that of the FW Mourngul (which is part of the Nighthaunt faction itself).
Would have loved Idoneth or Dwarves rather than stormcast here, but good chance this will get picked up pretty soon.
Great to see some gameplay innovation from GW with the spells. Their minis have been incredible lately but the game rules themselves are lagging.
Great look at this guys, I got more excited about this AoS thing talking to you guys yesterday, I’m still deciding on an army, but this new set is awesome!
Oh and great team work opening the box !!
Stormcast are very gappy on the shoulders, is that your doing or GW’s?
This isn’t really a new edition. Which is probably a good thing given the amount of armies books etc and warscrolls they’d have to re-write and make new. Core rules i.e. the game mechanics are still about 4 pages long (in large fonts) which GW should probably be praised for retaining. It’s slightly tweaked and that’s it. More a FAQ made official and live. This is basically AoS’s version of “Warhammer Battle Magic / Arcane Magic” it’s an expansion. What has been doubled down on is the fact that AoS is less and less a war game or fantasy battle… Read more »
I’ve pre-ordered this now – for the minis. I just wish I thought more highly of the rules. I like simple rules, but I would have liked to have seen a second edition make them a bit more interesting and dynamic in and of themselves. So, don’t know if I’ll play the game yet, but will certainly collect some of the models.
For what it’s worth, AoS is the game I’ve played most in the last year, and it ticks a lot of boxes for me. The rules are simple, yet there’s a surprising amount of subtlety in them that leads to interesting play, and I think the refinements to v2.0 enhance a lot of the interesting choices to be made in the game. And the players seem to be universally nice people, at least locally 🙂
@georgesealy – I so want to like the game. I was really keen on a new, simplified, large skirmish, high fantasy game. I think it’s a shame that 1st edition came out at the nadir of their ‘we don’t really care what our customers think’ period. From what I’ve seen the new edition looks like they’re trying to really tighten the game up, make it more logical (not shooting out of combat), more cinematic and more tactical while keeping it simple enough to work with existing army books. Which was probably the right decision for them, and sounds like it’s… Read more »
@angelicdespot if you do I’d love to hear your thoughts. It’s the game that has got me back into making an effort to get games in – a large portion of that is probably due to the people involved. For me that’s the single biggest factor anyway.
