New Stormcast & Nighthaunt Models + A MASSIVE Khorne Dragon
May 13, 2018 by brennon
We're already seen quite a lot of what's on offer for Age Of Sigmar, but I thought I'd consolidate a lot of the images for the two new big armies into one place from Games Workshop. First of all, we have the Sacrocant Chamber. These models are looking fantastic and it's nice to see that they've been developing an entirely new look for the Stormcast Eternals tied around this new surge of magical energy coming into the world of the Mortal Realms.
A whole lot of their new equipment is powered by magic. So, all of the big weapons that you're seeing here are actually firing massive bolts of energy.
The range has some interesting new takes on the style for the Stormcast Eternals. Yes, they have plenty of the golden armour that we're familiar with but also a chance to get stuck into painting the rainments of a more devout looking order.
We also got a preview of a new character for the Stormcast Eternals. This is an awesome female Stormcast Eternal, the Sequitor-Prime.
An awesome looking character who appears to be working on some way to bring the spirits of the dead back with her to the chambers of the Stormcast.
The Nighthaunt
As well as these new Stormcast Eternals we also had the addition of the new Undead force, a grand army of spirits and fiends summoned forth by Nagash, the Nighthaunt.
The Nighthaunt actually look like they would be an awesome army for someone to paint up if they were just getting started. Much like with the Necrons in Warhammer 40,000 you get access to an army that could be technically brilliant, or made to look awesome by simply working with washes.
I really love the selection of different models that we're seeing here doing something that I love to see Games Workshop doing. They always do a great job of showing flying and floating creatures without the need to use proper clear plastic flying stands.
We even get a selection of the undead as you'll see above from other races. The shades above are clearly the bodies of dead Skaven who have been brought back to serve Nagash, as very cool addition to the collection. Hopefully, we see more of that!
An awesome looking force and as you can see they really have put forth a good new army to be the foe of the Stormcast Eternals. A nice push forward within the narrative.
Mighty Dragons
As well as these forces, Chaos is not to be ignored. They have brought forth this amazing looking Khorne Dragon, a Forge World creation to stand as the centrepiece of your force.
Now that is impressive. Impractical, but very awesome indeed. I don't think we're going to see many of these on the battlefield but it sure would be nice to see what people do with it as a model.
What do you reckon of the new models?

That dragon looks rather good and those undead are solid but like always Sigmarines are meh.
Agreed. The dragon is superb. Pity that it’s a lawless diamond set in a polished turd, ;P
Dragon is fabulous… kind of a tricked out T-rex. Not sure I’d be willing to sell my house to own one though.
The undead are also very good.
More sigmarines. WTF?
that just blew my mind…. I can’t contextualise it any more – I have to paint that griffon as Foghorn Leghorn.
are they firing grenade-bolts from crossbows? Holy Hand-grenade of Antioch!
Wow. That dragon is actually the first AOS model I like. Very nice.
Yes.
I really can’t get more new Stormcast stuff, the so-called “Pile Of Shame” has got far too big…
THE HELL I CAN’T!!!
Gimme gimme gimme! I’ve been saying Sigmars Golden boys needed both decent Magical support and some Artillery since the beginning, was hoping that the Sacrocant Chamber would provide the former but now it’s going to provide both Halleluja!
Nighthaunts look great, they continue to produce great looking armies for the game (if I ignore the stormcast). Paint wise @brennon I think you will see some easy basic paint jobs but then the skilled painter will do amazing things with patinas and blends and transitions.
I’d genuinely be tempted by nighthaunts if I enjoyed the game, early reports and current books staying relevant means they probably haven’t turned it into a game I’d enjoy.
As an aside it is great to see more female models, shame they gave one a hoover though
lol
Those ghostly figures do look good. I really like the stylized fabric folds that Citadel is making on their newer miniatures – which their paint job shows off – and ‘special effects’ like modelling solids turning into vapor.
On that: does any other miniature company model special effects better?
Dunno. I get what you mean, value the direction on GW’s side and tip my imaginary hat towards the stylization. However, there is no fading effect whatsoever to speak of. There’s ethereal implication but no transition between different corporeal levels. Only ones and zeroes. Heads and arms and gear and nothingness where you might expect other bodyparts. Still, each part is left whole and intact, no phasing simulation, everything is still very much physical. Rackham did nice gaps and even fluid / swishy sculpting with a troop type of their Cynnwäll elves who were supposed to be in flux drifting… Read more »
Some of those sculpts are brilliant, even if I’m not interested in the game.
The new dragon and undead troops look fabulous, an I like the look of the new Griffin stead.
Just got back from Warhamfest and the pictures released do not do any of the models justice. The sigmarines look great and are part of the new staterset along with the undead.
More stormcast really????? How about some new Ironjawz and Fyreslayers
I absolutely agree they’re doing a Bretonnia on loads of armies; Sylvaneth, Fyreslayers, Ironjawz, Kharadron being chief amongst them
Might seem a bit brutal but if one didn’t get the only half baked feeling with AoS releases already, from the Idoneth interviews we know, that those were – or now turn out to be – rather fillers and test drives instead of full fledged contributions. They really want to split from solid ways it seems.
Considering Kharadron got released exactly 12 months ago, I’m not sure how you can compare it. Also, aside from SC, which are the poster boys, it’s pretty clear that GW release small, 10-12 unit armies and move on to other armies now, instead of releasing 20+ unit massive armies that never get updated as they did with WFB. You’re not supposed to collect one mini-faction like DoK, you’re supposed to collect Order. They’re taking a page from Malifaux or Infinity book there.
That last Stormcast makes me think of Ghostbusters.
The dragon looks great! Reminds me of Angrislaug, but its maybe just the colors. This dragon looks less bulky in a good way. 🙂
As awesome as the idea of undead Skaven-ghosts haunting the battlefield is, the heads of those models don’t quite strike me as rat skulls.
You are absolutely right: these are no rat-like skulls at all. Clearly these are horse skulls – or closest to anyway.
( I disagree on the coolness of ghostly Skaven though. Shambling rotting cadavres though is a different matter. It’s just that Skaven embody too little of beings of an ethereal soul for me to be represented as spirits. Maybe it’s their swarm beings thing and their lowly, rotten ways…^^ Spirits, ghosts and so on always have tragedy to them I feel.)
Wow. Finally, I get parts of the Sigmarines! These remind me of Diablo III.
In the end I actually might do something with Stormcasts now. Either an angelic host or a hellish one – corrupted celestials or demons of an Evil of my own creation. Difficult thing though is all the conversion work still needed. But no going back now anymore…
I’m hoping what we’re looking at is part of the new AoS starter box. I’ve heard rumours that there is a new box set. lucky I only have to wait till June to find out.
Who you gonna call? That Stormcast lady!
Is anyone else wondering if the size of that dragon is a response to the ridiculously big Mantic Giant?
I’d imagine that dragon has been in development for a couple of years minimum. Seem to remember seeing a wip a couple of years back at a forgeworld open day.
#3 made me think “Geordie La Forge and the Bell-ends”
