Games Workshop Give The Lowdown On Deck-Building In Shadespire
October 17, 2017 by brennon
The folks at Games Workshop have gone in-depth in their exploration of Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire with a new video (which you can see above) looking at the Deck-Building options available to you in this game from the world of Age Of Sigmar.
The video goes into depth explaining how you use the Objective Cards in order to focus your strategy towards a number of key areas with quick and easy points scoring...
...and maybe something a bit grander as well as your end goal to finish the enemy off when the time is right.
It's going to be interesting seeing which of the focused Objectives people go for in this game as they start to delve into the intricacies of the system over future games. I'm sure people will find a play style that they enjoy and stick with it, and a meta will no doubt develop as well if this gets into the competitive scene in enough numbers.
Power Deck
You also have a second deck which drives a lot of your gameplay and that is the Power Deck.
As they have mentioned, the Power Deck with its upgrades and more allow you to not only beef up your tough soldiers but also provide you with ways to play around the strengths of your opponents too.
When it comes down to it the deck building options are going to be very much tailored towards your favoured playstyle. I like the idea of lots of sneaky tricks being bought into play, with hopefully even more in the future as we potentially see Skaven being bought into the fold for this game.
Make sure to watch the video above and let us know what you think of the game now we've learned more about it.
We also have a Let's Play of the Core Box coming out later this week too which will give you a look at how the game plays! You can also check out our Unboxing videos for Ironskull's Boyz...
...and the Sepulchral Guard as well.
Make sure to let us know which one of these Warbands you're going to be playing as.
Are you going to be checking out Shadespire?

The deck building aspect to this game has me really interested. A little upsetting that to get all of the cards you need to buy all of the different warbands but a smart marketing move. Not like you need all of the cards to play the game or even be reasonably competitive, the new cards seem to just add new layers of tactics. Will get more annoying if the new cards become nigh-essential for competitiveness.
Same model as FFG with Xwing and Armada, plenty of ships that I don’t intend on using but I want the cards in the pack. Get’s me every time 🙂
Its the model that stopped me purchasing anything beyond the X-wing starter when I realised that to be competitive I had to buy pretty much everything.
Fair enough if say the Undead set has a card that works well with the Stormcast or the Orcs have one that would fit well in the Bloodbound deck for example, so you get a cool little bonus if you buy the new warbands, but lets hope GW don’t take the model too far like FFG seem to have done where to remain competitive you have to buy practically every single release.
This game definately has my attention, planning on buying Sepultral Guard
I pre-ordered my copy the other day. Really like the opinions and tips in this deck builder video. I have been checking out the let’s play and demo game videos as they’ve become more prevalent on Shadespire recently. The deck building dynamic sounds really interesting. I wonder over a quick game like this whether the cards in your hand actually just add random replayability to extend the life of the game or actually play into strategies. I think maybe I will stick to the starter “open these first” packs when playing new comers to the game. I think if my… Read more »
