Let’s Play: A Song of Ice & Fire
October 30, 2017 by dignity
While he was in the neighbourhood Justin got a chance to play A Song of Ice & Fire with Designer Michael Shinall from CMON at the BoW US Studio.
Using the Stark vs Lannister Starter Set the guys give a quick demonstration of how the mechanics of the game will play out and the various tactical options available.
The set-up is a 16pt game, which is half the size of the starter box, and they will be playing one of the five Game of Thrones game modes - Control Point. This involves capturing and controlling one of the three control points on the map, for which they will gain objective points and bonus tactical abilities.
Will this be a Whispering Wood or a Red Wedding?

Interesting game. I like the disordely charge rule, that’s a nice bit of interest to add to combat.
One thing I’m less keen on is the movement trays – especially once you start losing figures, they will get in the way and look a bit ugly. I’d be tempted to make each rank a separate tray, just so I can remove them as well as casualties are taken.
That’s why I like Kings of War as a system and not have casualty removal, also makes it sooo much quicker to set up and put away your army. Wonder if using d12’s placed on you tray to keep track of numbers rather than removing model to make it a better looking game.
You could just use 2×5 or 7mm D6 dice frames on the back of the base
Nice game mechanics. So new and also very familiar. I love the non combat character system. Should have KS it. I can’t wait the retail version. Hope in French.
The wife spoiled Game of Thrones for me when she broke her foot and subsequently watched the whole 7 series without me, what a BITCH!!
Can’t say this game rocks my world.
@Raglan – too funny!!
I am totally interested. I used to play War of The Ring [GW] and love the movement trays.
Glad I backed this at kickstarter. I was mainly in it for the figures to use with other rules, but the game itself is looking rather good as well. The tactics board is very different and interesting – evokes the setting very well.
I think everyone will be very happy with the gameplay. There is a lot of depth to it. I can tell you per Michael if it is in the books it is fair play to become a mini in the game. I have seen some future designs and all I can tell you is Wow!
On a side note, Michael plays a mean game of The Godfather Corleone’s Empire
@dignity, you missed a full swing with the berserkers. You activated Cathlyne to given da free attack action, but then you put a counter on the berserkers. They had not activated that round yet!
If anyone is interested in a discussion forum on ASOIAF or on the latest and greatest in terms of units, tactics cards, etc., I put together a quick website because there really wasn’t any similar resource available. It is intended to just be a fun place to hang out and discuss the game until release. Nothing fancy.

I did back this game, and am grateful I did, I do like the fact how you can play a really quick game with just half of the mini’s in the box. Im sure the game that they played took well over an hour.
The non-combat character mechanics are very nicely built out. Good to see that feel very reminiscent of the world of capable of influencing the battle with significant behind the scenes action, and with someone countering that as well. Very innovative little piece.
