Remember D-Day On The 6th Of June With Flames Of War
May 27, 2013 by brennon
D-Day was an important turning point in the war and you can remember the Normandy Landings with a fantastic compilation book coming out from the folks behind Flames of War...
As well as this compilation book there are going to be updates for many of the current books including the two you see below, Atlantik Wall and Overlord...
Each of these books has been buffed with Atlantik Wall now at 240 pages and Overlord at 300. That's a lot of historical goodness in these updates to the Allied and Axis force books.
You'll also be able to get your hands on their new Rural Bases in a neat and interesting way...
"From Thursday 6th June through to Sunday 16th June (that gives you two weekends to find the time to do this) any customer who goes along to their local store and presents their old copies will not only be able to pick up the new pair of books for the combined special price but they will also be given a set of our new “rural” bases absolutely free."
- All lists updated for the version 3 rules
- 2 new American Companies
- 5 new British Companies
- 4 new German Companies
- Atlantik Wall now 240 pages
- Operation Overlord now 300 pags
- For customers pre-ordering the D-Day compliation they will recieve a free set of the new rural bases.
You'll be able to find out more about this event nearer to the date but for now it's looking great for fans of Flames of War.
Will you be storming the beaches?
I know that this game being about WW2 may cover much if not all events that happened during its time. But to have its release of a book called D-Day on June the 6th? This is a day of reflection and remembrance not for publicity gimmicks to sell gaming books. I see this as poor taste. Perhaps they’ve been involved in covering this war for so long in a game format that they’ve forgotten to be respectful of what happened. In any case I will be at my city’s town square paying my respect to the fallen rather than buying… Read more »
People show their respect in different ways. I personally think that creating a compilation book/extra books for replaying the events of that day is a great way to get right into the history of the event. It teaches people, shows what kinds of soldiers and characters were involved and generally makes you more informed about quite possibly the most important event of World War II. Considering Flames of War is a game about military combat, especially around this period, it wouldn’t make much sense for them NOT to cover it. In fact each of these books will probably be packed… Read more »
I know what your talking about and do feel that in many ways FoW helps in its own way to keep the flame alive about the events that happened. That I do support and the book over all I support. What I only wished was for the release date be June the 7th out of respect for the fallen. I would have even applauded them if they encouraged gamers to put aside the dice for June 6th.
@manpug I’m with you on this. I have no problem with historical wargaming but let’s just remember that thousands of people died and at least try and pretend we are not cashing in on that for one day.
So, my copy of Turning Tide is already relegated to the garbage bin.. great that lasted a whole lot of time (not). Other than that I would have preferred it to be released on the 7th of june, for reasons stated by manpug.
“any customer who goes along to their local store and presents their old copies will not only be able to pick up the new pair of books for the combined special price but they will also be given a set of our new “rural” bases absolutely free.”
As if this makes up for the fact that the books are outdated after a very short period of time and Battlefront seems not be bothered to at least provide the updates in written form like they did in the past in such cases. I am glad I waited to get the books and I usually do not get the newest armybooks for this very reason. Luckily I do not play in a competitive environment.
“Blood, Guts & Glory, Devil’s Charge and NUTS! will also see an update.”
?
I’m assuming that this is implying something like a PDF update, and not a new revised compilation … given that these books are generally only months old still. The sentence is just nebulous enough to imply that people who just bought those books have maybe put their money out too soon.
As I read that (from the article linked above) it sounded like they were getting updated. However looking back I think it’s just the two Normandy Landing books getting refreshed. Therefore that might save a lot of confusion and I’ve removed the sentence in question.
EDIT: On even further inspection of the listed changes I am quite certain it’s just the two books you can see above getting changed.
Phew – ok that makes sense, thanks for taking the time to double check as well.
I’m looking forward to the D-Day revision, the Market Garden compilation was really nice, and the hardcovers looks sooo good on the shelf.
Good catch @brennon thumbs up for the edit clearing the confusion.
While I appreciate manpug’s position, I agree with Ben. Different people remember in different ways.
For some people, especially those not in the UK or mainland Europe WW2 is just a topic they learned about in school.
Releasing books with pages of thoroughly researched history possibly brings this information to a new audience who would otherwise remain ignorant of the huge sacrifice and the enormous loss of life experienced at this time.
I will be paying my respects at the cenotaph and purchase the book next time I am in the hobby store.
well they are x-GW staff what do you expect

Does anyone know what this means for the “Earth and Steel” book?
It also says “the German defence of France June-September 1944” on it…
Ok now I get it. Seriously, BoW? That was such a misleading post. From the FoW website, Earth & Steel is being updated and will now be called Atlantic Wall, and Turning Tide is being updated and will now be called Overlord. Bam
Oh well they have been out for a few years now I am going to cue up for my copy
Do I get the rural Bases only if I own the old Books ? Or also when I buy the new Set without owning the old books ?
Change the release date to the 7th out of respect? Seriously? As if no-one died on the 7th either, the operation wasn’t over in one day. There is nothing wrong with the release date, if i was them i would have released it a week earlier so it would be easier for people to write up lists and hold events/games on the 6th if they want to with the new rules. Should they not release it until the end of september out of respect. Also its good of Battlefront to give something to people for upgrading their old books and… Read more »
I bought the new books and like them… I had all the early version two soft books for Normandy, but was fortunate to skip the “Earth and Steel” and “Turning Tide” volumes…
I see nothing wrong with any release date for anything…. The books are far from being an insult…. certainly not any worse than having a rabbit for Easter….. 😀
Anything that encourages rememberance cannot be so bad….
