Light Up The Battlefield With Powered Play Gaming
April 16, 2013 by brennon
A company called Powered Play Gaming is running a Kickstarter currently to help bring a neat modular kit to the tabletop, allowing you to light up your models and add effects to the battlefield.
"We came up with a modular LED kit that lets you only have to worry about where you want to run the effects. Simply drill your holes, run the wires and plug it in. You can do what you want with your models, where you want it, with the colors and effects of your choice."
As you can see the effects are pretty awesome and if you believe the pledge video on their Kickstarter, even a child can set this up. Of course this could be a little more modelling than some people are used to but the end result is epic.
I particularly like the look of it on the Drop Pod. We all like seeing something different on the tabletop and the modular design of this should make it easy to 'plug in and play' (forgive the pun!).
Do you think you'll be pledging?
I am currently working on a lighting system for a model http://geekpainter.blogspot.co.uk/
not a Wargaming model but i am tempted to try it
Would be fun to have your models lit for use in night fight scenarios, turn your lights off, get a few glow in the dark dice and your set. Also I could finally have glowing necrons!
We actually had a glowing Necron Doom Scythe at Adepticon. Check it out at: http://poweredplay.net/getting-ready-for-adepticon/
I don’t know about you, but I always, no exceptions, play 40K in pitch black darkness. Helps me roll a lot of 6s …
I recall seeing this a few weeks back. I didn’t know it was more than a pet project.
Maybe it’s just me…but actually playing a game in lower enough lighting that the models actually look nice lit, seems a bit much. If I was to play a Night scenario, I think I’d be more comfortable just assuming it was dark out. The only scenario I can see this looking right in, would be in a display case showing off my models when the aren’t in play. Could just be me, though.
I like the idea very much, honestly its pretty cool. BUT, I just cant see paying those prices for led kits. Honestly it’s very cheap to just make it yourself. I have had no previous experience working with electronic circuitry but have recently lit a model of my own no problem, along with it being insanely cheap to do. The board is nice, being able to just plug in whatever light you want, but just doesn’t justify it in my eyes. Not trash talking, just an opinion.
With all the guides on Youtube and books available, parts from ebay and other online retailers i would have to agree. Not looked in to the cost of boards yet as i have not needed any but there are a lot out there that could be used for wargaming models. Also learning is fun!
Hmmm…maybe the video doesn’t do it justice but it just looks a bit tacky to stick what are relatively large led’s onto my painted and sculpted model. If they were better incorporated into the model maybe but I’ve no inclination to stick christmas lights on my £50 piece of plastic thanks.
The idea of playing in low light settings makes a game seem way more dramatic, especially in 40k nightfighting missions or when you haven’t finished painting all your minis. I think this would be cool if they could make a bulb or a clear casing that looks like the glowing part of a plasma cannon so you never needed to paint source lighting. If they could them to work on railguns I would seriously consider starting a tau army.
Hey Cannonball, have you seen our Hammerhead? http://poweredplay.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Hammerhead-Lit-Under-225×300.jpg
